Why the difference in price ?

I have noticed that if you take a Rem870 or Mossberg500 and put a black plastic stock and a short barrel the price seems to jump a fair bit.

Are the tactical models more robust with better parts or is it just a gimmic. Not trying to be a smart arse I am honestly wondering.
 
The 870 express and Police have the same steel receiver but the police have a steel extractoer instead of MIM and more refined polish on all metal parts, the trigger guard is metal instead of oplastic and the police model is assembled and tested on a different line.

I had an express from 2008 that was great, sold it because it was too heavy for grouse hunting bhut the gun was flawless..

If you have stores around you you should go there and check them all out, a lot easier then to decide. The mossy 500 is the direct competitor, different design as well, shouldering them will make you decide quickly :)
 
I have both and without a doubt I shoot better with an 870. Just thinking a shorty might be good to have around for some range fun and in case aliens kick down my door and try to take me to their ship.
