why were FNs prohibited ??

I had one of those FN's, they were parts guns, but boy were they ever good. Mine had a Brit lower, Aussie upper and brand new barrel. I had them give me the ugliest Ishy mag they had, so I could turn it in (turns out I was the only resident of Surrey who turned in a high cap mag for destruction, and I really only did it as a protest-the mag itself was filthy, full of grease and the lips were beyond bad). This rifle was also registered using all 3 serial numbers, since the woman at the counter asked me "why would anyone want something like that" and then didn't know which sn to use, I told her to use them all - and she did. There was a lot of bad feeling and mistrust at that time, as it turned out it was well placed.

IIRC the FNs were singled out under Mulroney, I definetly recall the Gunrunner or the like pre-1988 (or that year) with the ads in it calling for action to stop the FNs from being singled out, and yes as folks here have alluded to, it was in that time frame that not only Canada but several other FN using countries were preparing to switch to 556s. The fear of a slew of FNs hitting the market was a big reason.

This is the most accurate post to answer the OPs question.

Without reading the whole thread...just the title.

Because the government are whores....and always will be...

They took my favorite gun and made sure I could never own one.

Bastards.

FN Prohib

Bought my Israeli FAL in 1990. I have reregistered it twice since then as required. I am no longer allowed to shoot it. I can take it to a gunsmith if required. Why?

I expect they are prohibited because they were going to be unleashed on the public just as the Enfields were. Not that the Lee Enfield is an assault rifle. Comes as a shock to any one who carried one on Juno beach I expect.

As far as I'm concerned the M14 is a superior 308 battle rifle. Some will have a different opinion. I do like my M1A.

How do I put a photo on here?

I had a lovely little Ausie FAL shorty. Since I didn't have my RPAL at the time it was registered to a friend. I lost it when they prohibited it. I've wanted to get another one ever since. Bastards.

And AR, these people ALWAYS play dirty pool.

How do I put a photo on here?

There are directions somewhere around here...

No need

Mine is identical to the Belgian made comercial version on the bottom of your photo. The condition of the but stock on the one in this photo is better than mine.

My two sons have handled mine...and were pi**ed off when I explained that they would never, ever be allowed to shoot it legally.

When initially prohibited we were told that we could take these rifles to a certified range on a one day permit. I was suprised the day I recieved the letter telling me I was no longer allowed to shoot it. Even more confusing was the line telling me I could still have it repaired. I guess they are encouraging us to dewat them.

Before the changes to the firearms regulations in 92 I was led to believe owning this rifle would pretty much guarantee me the right to own everything else short of a full auto. This was not true and as a result I never recieved 12-5 status. At the time I had a Colt AR 15 as well and had sold my M-14 as I didn't want to have too many converted auto's in the event they were seized under the new regulations.

In hindsight I might have purchased a Steyr Aug and certainly a short barreled pistol. I can remember seeing 25 calibre semi auto pistols at gun shows for $25. I didn't really want one but it would have gotten me in the category.

it was mulroney and campbell who made the fn's prohib in the early 90's.
the fn was restricted in the 80's (maybe late 70's).
most of the prohib. status came from campbell.i sent her a letter telling her that if her party did this they would NEVER get my vote and they would for certain lose the next election.i got back a thick envelope with a form letter and the new rules.so much for them, they got SLAUGHTERED in the next election and lost official party status.
then along came cretin and rock and they made things worse.
in the 80's ak's,w14's,bren's,all that was non restricted.go to store plop down money and show pal-write down info in ledger and away you went on your merry way.i don't want to sound negative, but even with a harper majority i doubt we'll ever go back to the "good 'ol days".i hope i'm wrong...
p.s. i could have bought an ishapor fn for 99 bucks.

CA & FA free for all will not come back no matter who's in charge in Ottawa. Our world has changed a lot since the 60's and today's liberal conditioned sheep voters will never allow those good old days to return to the firearms community.

Yep, like most members have pointed out, there is no good reason for these to be prohibited. Even if you are grandfathered, you cant een shoot them which is just adding insult to injury. Pisses me off to no end

I got to shoot the 308 FN back in 86 at Vernon army cadet camp, Now, I am in the service and we have a pop gun now, lol

but thats because the 5.56 round is less agressive, LOL

I was 13 at the time, WOW what a gun, remember unloading a crate from the truck by my self at the time, just to show the city boys I could do it. carried it all the way to the shooting line too.

There was one girl at camp that let the action go forward by mistake and it took a chunk of her arm off.. you had to be carfull, as it was a monster for 13 year olds to be playin with.

Interesting thread. I went thru all the posts, cause I've always been curious
why the Tories whacked the FN. I remember when Joe Clark changed the status on
the AR-15 back to "available". I went out and bought an SP-1. Had it
for years and years. Consensus seems to be that the conversion from 7.62 to
5.56 was going to unleash all the "machine guns" on the unsuspecting public...
But I've got an old Model 100 Winchester which is a pretty serviceable semi-auto
in .308... Crazy laws. Seems the "unintended consequence" of this particular prohib,
is that all the aboriginals now have the FN's. Not really a great outcome.
What we need here, is maybe a special licence, maybe like the "Curios and Relics"
FFL the Yanks have. You get a Federal Firearms Licence, but only for "Curios and
Relics", and you can buy and sell militaria directly, in the US. We should ask for
something like this here. Maybe a Canadian "CRFFL" (collectors in the US who have
this call themselves "Crufflers") would allow ownership of things like the FN and
the AK47. (That's my big regret. I passed up a chance to buy a cheap AK47 around
the time I got the AR. Dumb mistake. I can still get an AR, with my restricted PAL,
but the AK47 is now out of reach.)
It would be nice if the firearms laws could be amended to allow collectors to acquire
FN's and AK's and such. This is not such a stretch. The current law allowed me
to acquire this:
BlackSpecial_floor_detail.jpg

which I sold a few years back, cause I needed the money. Of course, I regret
selling the Swiss "Special". Given that the FN is big piece of our history
as Canadians, it seems quite wrong that there is no legal mechanism to
allow collectors to possess a working version of this device. Private
collections are valuable cultural artifacts. An operational FN in .308 is
no more lethal than my Model 100 in .308, and both are semi-auto.
Perhaps it may be possible to amend the legislation at some point in the
future. (..the "audacity of hope", eh?) :D
