Hey Guys

I have a Colt 1911, and my mags won't stay seated. I tug on them, some seem to stay put others I can pull out. The ones that seem ok will back out and the slide finds an empty chamber. No I'm not hitting the mag release. This doesn't happen to my other 1911. Thoughts.

Loaded or not. I noticed it today when shooting, a few stove pipes, then click. Slide falls on empty chamber, have to slam the mag in. Action the slide, get a few shots off, then empty chamber because mag would not stay seated. Its on an older race gun, but I used the thing last week, shot over 200rds no hickups with the same set of mags:confused: WTF.

Have you checked the mag catch and spring for damage/wear?

Hey Recce, I think your right. I looked and fondled my other Gold Cup and see more meat ie mag catch metal, now to find a new one and a little screw to replace the I buggered due to lack of a small screwdriver:redface:

To remove a colt style mag release. Make sure gun is unloaded, push in mag release and then using a small screwdriver push and turn what appears to be a screw on the other side of the mag release, 1/4 turn. That screw is not a screw and can be easily damaged, also it doesn't take much effort to remove it, just technique.

For what it's worth, I had a Colt 45 that was having magazine issues caused by a certain type of rubber grip kit - parts of it actually protruded into the opening in the handle of the frame and were interfering with magazine movement.

Back to square one. Got a new mag release catch. Mags still won't seat ie lock in. I took off the grips and only have the receiver in my hand, and the only mags that seat are the McCormick 10 shots with the bumper removed. Reassembled the gun, Again only the 10 rounders seat. I have 5 different brands, all worked before in the gun. I can get one Wilson one to seat with the action open but the slide release is so tight, I can't drop the slide. Ideas?

Worn out catch/spring

Check to see if you have clearance around the mag well. Compare all the lips on the tops of the with the ones that work, they might be sticking up too far because of stretch and the slide is pushing the mag down.

I have 5 different brands of mags, all worked in the gun previously, no problem. The mag catch finally wore out. Got a new one. Gun acting up as previously mentioned. The only mags that work now are the Chip McCormick 10 shots with the rubber bumpers removed. They worked before. All mags work in my other Gold Cup again no problem. Even swapped out mag catches. Race still gun giving me grief.:(

If they are both Gold Cups can you swap the mag catch/spring assembly from the no problem one to the problem one to eliminate that element? Are you removing the grips to observe the mag as it is inserted to see if there are any obstructions? Maybe another Islander GunNut knows of a gunsmith around Duncan. Would posting pics of that area help?

I was trying to troubleshoot the gun myself, I got the 10 rounders to work, the hammer does fall occasionally when I drop the slide on a full mag. No way will the other brands work, Shooting Star, Wilson, Colt etc. I guess I might just have to drop it off to Joe on Annacis next time I over there:confused:
