Why would someone buy a .17HMR?

I own an Anschutz 1717 (.17 HMR) and it is the most accurate rifle I own at 150 yds. (on a reasonably calm day). I own a few high end .22's and I never find time to shoot them anymore. When I go out gopher shooting I bring a .17 HMR, a .223 and a 22-250. These three calibers handle all my shooting needs from 50-450 yds. for small varmints and target. I used to have a .22 mag but found the .17 flatter shooting and more accurate so I sold it. Phil.

what are you charging for 17 HMR Hornady V-maxes?? probably more than what they cost you to shoot LOL

17 HMR is great for gophers, they split like little bananas. They are definitely an improvement on the .22LR, but that is where any comparisons end.

Question:
Is there any reason in my situation that I should consider the .17hmr? Shots would be under 150 yards?

Because a .17HMR will be the most accurate rifle you can own for shooting 150yrds and less, for the price. Mine shoots one hole groups @100yrds on a calm day.

For shooting and hunting small critters. (squirrels, crows, gophers, rabbits, ground hogs, pigeons, raccoons, skunks, and maybe fox.
The 17HMR is:
-Accurate
-deadly
-Flat shooting
-Explosive on impact
-Little or no ricochet
-###y
-and never was intended for coyotes!

Pardon??? price of what??? this is getting silly now,, 150 yards and less

I had a 17 a few years ago,I was on the way to my cabin when I seen 8-12 wolves in a new pasture. They were about 60-75 yds away.A big white-grey sat looking at me about 60 yds away.I held on the chest and shot.(facing me)It fell and looked like that was it.Then it got up and followed the pack. The open area was about 300- 400 yds the one I shot never slowed down.
The 22 mag would have killed it with the bigger slug.

17hmr was never intended for 'big wolves'. Not one bit surprised at the outcome. A 17 grain pellet that'll pretty much come apart in the first quarter inch of soft squirrel flesh is not exactly going to give big penetration. Here's why: It's not supposed to. Want to virtually eliminate richochets in a squirrel patch, get the hmr. Wanna punch through a moose and keep goin... get a 340weatherby and load it right up...

Hittin' stuff is one thing, killing them is another.

Looks like the people that still own the 17 HMR's love em, and the guys that sold theirs hate em. The guys that haven't tried them yet still think they're cool.

I can't seem to get ahold of this guy, perhaps some of you could let him know he wasted his money.

(world record smallest group using a VQ in 17hmr)

Are there a lot of benchrest guys using the 17HMR now ,, who cares about a target we are talking about shooting varmints.
The performance for me aswell as others was not enough difference to validate the differnce in price in ammo, I can rip apart a gopher with 22LR , and pay substatially less money. If I want to see them fly I use a 204 Ruger, and 17 HMR will not do that.

Whats left to say

Wow stupid response......such a different story..... I'm on a farm shooting groundhogs; this guy is at a shooting range with sand bags.

... and I do both. How stupid eh?

edit: You know, the title of the thread is "Why would someone buy a .17HMR?" Sorry for pointing out some of the many reasons folks not only buy an hmr, but enjoy them.

Thats a good point to me they are a lot of fun to shoot be it paper or live targets and why bother to try and convince someone that doesnt like the round, buy the calibre you like and enjoy it.

:agree:

Although I indicated why I have no use for it, I would never "dis" someone for having a different opinion.
