Why you may wanna check cases before loading them..

Range brass, cleaned, not inspected, resulted in a few rounds I need to take apart. Lucky me they were only 4 rounds... back to inspecting each case :(

everyone who reloads should be checking the necks on all imperial brass as 3/10 will split on the first factory firing. i have seen factory 3030 imperial ammo split on the first firing, the entire 20 rd box, that is why i put imperial brass in the scrap bucket and sell it later.

True but a simple annealing will render them usefull.
 
That's why I'll never use a case feeder. Gives me a chance to roll the brass in my fingers and watch out for NT while I'm ramping up the previous round.
 
While I was learning to reload and doing everything as per the reloading manual, I was surprised to have a few .38 special (range brass) cases split at the mouth, but only AFTER the final crimping. I guess the crimp itself put the final amount of stress on the case which caused it to split.

In other words, inspecting prior to loading didn't prevent the problem, which means that an inspection is necessary at every stage of the reloading process.

Inspection AFTER all the ammo is loaded is also a very good idea. I always do it, that's how i caught those loaded split rounds.

And I don't have a case feeder :(

You should always be checking your handloads after they are finished.
I put all mine through a case gauge and have that final look, in addition to reviewing them before they go in the magazine.

That brass looks like it came out of a 9mm major ipsc blaster
 
Just curious , Is it possible to anneal 9mm or other smaller sizes, seems odd . I mean , never done that . I thought annealing is good for bottle necks only .- Biggs

Annealing restores brass malleability. In other words, as long as the case is made of brass, you can theoretically anneal it to restore the materials' flexibility. This is a lengthy process though and is only worth doing on cases that are expensive.

As an example, I have 20 .577/450 Martini Henry cases that I plan on loading for this spring... these cases are roughly 3-5$ a piece (plus it's very scarce and a special order), so rest assured that I will anneal them quite often in between reloading sessions. Now... 9mm range brass can be had for 50$/1000, so I doubt I'd be putting that much energy in it, lol!

I have caught a few 38 special cases that made it into some 357 brass I bought, after they had a full house .357 load dropped into them. If you look at them it's easy to see as the case is too short and the bullet looks like it isn't seated all the way.

That would've ended terribly as they are only good for about half the presusre that a 357 runs.
 
Good point. Since I'm still learning to reload, stuffing ammo boxes is my final inspection, too.

If you're up for buying a new trinket, "lets face it, who isn't :D", get yourself a multi-place chamber gage, like the ones sold by EGW. These are commonly used by competition shooters and by using one of these you not only handle the finished product but verify your rounds will indeed chamber properly before you box em up. Cost maybe 15 or 20 bucks. If you're handling em anyway, may as well make it count.

for the price of buying another 1000 once fired, its not worth my time or effort. i wouldnt even consider annealing 9mm.
 
Funny, any split case I have ever experienced had an off tone to it when handled at one stage of the process or another - normally while picking cases out of my tumbler and dropping them into a bucket. Of course, those who use revolving screens, dump their cleaned cases into a case feeder, run them through a progressive loader at 400 cases per hour, and stuff loose loads into their guns may not handle cases at all!

I have fired pistol cases cracked at the mouth, and have read of deliberate tests of firing split cases in a revolver, all without incident, but good practice and an interest in being somewhat able to predict where the bullet holes may lie on a target would decree one really shouldn't!
