Bought some federal 3” #4 buck last year and sighted in the ghost rings with it. Mounted the red dot the other day and wanted to zero it today. Put a piece of card board up at 10 yards and put a mark in the Center. Chambered a shell and pulled the trigger, holy crap that hurt the shoulder. Brought the red dot up about 10” and shot again. I told my buddy I’m done. I cant shoot it anymore. He shot it a few times and said the recoil was way worse than his pump 12ga 3-1/2”. This was on a 1301 T.

The strange thing is when I zeroed the ghost rings last year with the same ammo I don’t recall the recoil being that bad. The recoil was substantially worse than my buddies unbraked 338 Rum using 300 gr bullets.
Not sure if I turned into a whimp when I turned 60 but dam that hurt.

Check out Symtac Consulting on Youtube. Rob Haught preaches the “push / pull” technique for recoil mitigation of a shotgun. It can reduce felt recoil pretty significantly.
This is the only way to shoot a pump...however the OP said his gun is a 1301 T (auto).

I recently got a Benelli supernova tactical that takes 3.5 inch shells so of course I had to get some and try it out
It definitely was an eye opener lol

Perhaps your panties were on to tight that day?

Maybe you need a muzzle brake on that shotgun?

I kid I kid

My shotgun chambered in 3.5" only weighs 5.5lbs. it kicks like a mule with high brass 3.5" shells. I find semi's are quite a bit more forgiving than a pump for recoil, but still quite aggressive with the magnum rounds.

The position you take makes a big difference too.

Today I shot about 90 45/70 from a Marlin 1895. I pushed myself past comfortable recoil because I don't get out as much as I used to. Most of the 45/70 loads kicked harder than my sako 375 h&h. It has a brake and my loads aren't pushing limits.

The only one I’ve ever sold as a result of muzzle brake blast and recoil was an old JM Marlin guide gun in 4570 with a factory ported muzzle. By comparison, I had a 375 Ruger which didn’t FEEL or SOUND any worse than a 30-06 with stout 180 grain loads.

I've always thought the 3" shells to be a type of self-punishment that is unnecessary except when taking on dangerous game, shooting steel shot at high flying birds, or breaking in a Benelli M4 (which I was unhappy to discover needed about 20-30 3" jobs through it before it would cycle 2 3/4" shells reliably).

Remove the red dot and try the gun again with the ghost rings. Looking through the red dot would position your head differently which may amplify the recoil impulse. An alternative would be to shoot 2-3/4" lighter loads. I practice with my slug gun using Challenger low-recoil slugs but use Brennekes when hunting.
