Widow left with shotgun, need help with value

One of the knowledgeable guys on Shotgun world says this:

If that is the serial number and the little x's just replaced numbers and there were no letter prefixes......Then this gun was made in 1928.

This gun was made before the introduction of the Sweet Sixteen, so it is undoubtably a Standard Sixteen. It will have a short chamber and will not take the current standard 2 3/4" shells without substantial modification.

Most of these early 16 ga guns are worth between $350 and $450 USD.

Pictures would be nice,

Gold trigger puts the gun in the early '60s at the oldest. A sweet 16 will say that on the left receiver. Standard weight 16's weighed as much as a light 12. Nice gun. It will be chambered for 2 3/4" 16 bore shotshells.

cheers Darryl

I'm the guy from shotgunworld that MD referred to.

I suspect that we were not given the whole serial number.....there is a letter prefix missing. If it is a 16 gauge gun then it is probably an X, S or an A prefix.

In addition I can tell you the gun is a Sweet Sixteen made between 1951 and 1964.

I know it is a Sweet because the gold trigger was used on all Sweet Sixteens starting with thier introduction in 1936. ("madtrapper" is wrong) The Standard Sixteen was never offered with a gold plated trigger.

I know it was made in '51 or later because it has a cross block safety, which was introduced in the middle of 1951.

It was made in '64 or earlier because of the style of lettering used for the words Browning Automatic on the buttplate.

Get me the serial number and I'll give you the date of production within 3 months or so.

Regarding the value.....as a Sweet Sixteen in mint condition it is worth between $1,200 and $1,400 USD.

Can we reconfirm that it is a 16 gauge? Can we get the asterisk code off the side of the barrel so we can identify the choke?

... in the USA - it is a good market down there for Belgium humpbacks ... in Canada I think you would be hard pressed to get half of that ...
