Wife and I buying a handgun... Caliber recommendations?

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are beginners and looking to buy a handgun each. She suggested that we get them in different calibers. She also likes the Glock and Beretta 92fs inox. She doesn't know anything about guns (like me) and she chose those two based on looks. They are not super expensive, but they are also not cheap. From what I read it sounds that they are very reliable.

Any recommendations for calibers? A 9mm and a .40? 9 and .45? She doesn't want 22.

Any of you owe guns with your significant other? What works for you or what do you suggest?

Thanks in advance

It would be more practical to have a single caliber.
It would be worth you while to go to a shop with a large inventory and handle the various guns. Or even better, visit a range and try different pistols.

A 9 mm is the best choice. Period!

Are you member of a gun club? What i would do in your place is shoot few before you buy. Gun nutz at the local range will help you with that problem. :) Offer to pay for ammo but most people will lol at you. If you are not a memeber of a local gun club go to your local gun store and see how they fit in your hand. Again personal opinion, but i would keep away from .40 and .45 calibers because of the snappines of the round and price.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies.

That's what I said, same caliber but she said she wanted to have options and is very unlikely we would be buying new handguns within the next few years.

I don't have semi-auto center fire pistols, but if you must have different calibres per the wife's orders - why not consider one of the guns being a .357 revolver? You can tone down the recoil with .38 SPL rounds or jump up to the heavy load .357. I was at the range yesterday with my friend's Glock 22 and it snapped quite a bit more than my .357 (but I liked that snap).

9mm as a first choice is a good choice and the 92fs is a real good pistol.

there is no real justification for having a .40.

there is a justification for having a .45 : a good 1911 (meaning that if you acquire one don't go for a 1911 in 9mm).

revolver : S&W 686 (.357) or a beautiful Uberti "Man with no name" .38 conversion :)

Where are you located and is there a range near you that does public rentals? Nothing beats shooting a few handguns to really see what fits your hands, especially if you both will be sharing the two. Something with a couple different backstrap combos might be a good thing. My wife has small hand, I have reg size hands. We both use different backstrap a on my m&p9, she's more into shotguns and long gun though and doesn't really show much intrest in pistols so it's not a huge issue for me. If she was into pistols I'd want here to buy her own anyway, then they would be well fitting for her in the grip dept.

Think of getting a revolver and a semi-auto in the same caliber, cheaper to buy bulk of one caliber but you get two really different guns.

but if you must have different calibres per the wife's orders
Hahahaha that's right. Another "order" is no revolver type of gun haha.

We will definitely go to a couple of gun shops and see how different models fit. The range the we are becoming members of is currently under construction.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I would suggest 9mm. In my (an my wife's) opinion it is the perfect balance between power and control. Just an opinion though. I would also suggest going to a range and perhaps renting a few different calibers and handgun designs and trying them out before you buy.

9mm is a no brainer especially with the cost of any other caliber.
Checkout the iwi baby Jericho. Great guns.

Don't be afraid of an old wheelguns, revolvers I find are always more fun. Don't get me wrong I love autos and in the fact all guns but when I take friends out for the first time they want to shoot the guns they have seen in movies. But by the end they love the revolvers being you can shoot single action with a crisp trigger you will find accuracy is great, plus there is something to be said about loading a revolver. Just my 2 cents, or go get the SW 500 haha at $4 a shot.

SW500 haha... $4 a shot? You will need a lot of cash to really master that gun...or experience I guess, but I imagine that comes with the more you shoot as long you are doing it properly.

Yes, she is liking the glock 17.

Price of 9mm is very appealing compared to other bigger calibers for sure. I liked the comment of 9mm being the perfect balance of power and control.

Those IWI baby eagles are ###y!!! (Coming from the guy that says his wife chooses guns by looks only haha) but yea I really liked the baby Eagles.. They just came out with a 3 generation but is not available in Canada yet.

And yea, definitely great idea to shoot different calibers at the range...closest thing you get to a test drive. And also I don't think there's a "14 day return/exchange policy" haha

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you're from Southern Alberta you and the wife are more than welcome to try out any of my pistols, in different calibers, and see what you like.

I'm speechless. You are very kind. I'm a hobbyist musician and participate in different forums, no one has ever given me such an opportunity like you just did in more than 10 years. THANK YOU.

All of you guys/girls are and have been great.

We are in BC, thanks for the offer.

A steel/metal 9mm (eg the Beretta, Sig 226 or CZ 75/shadow) and a nice revolver in 38/357 (S&W686, Ruger GP100, or Blackhawk if you like single action) would be the perfect combo imo.

I totally get going with what you think looks cool, particularly when these will be just fun range guns. If you haven't considered it, the CZ shadow tends to work very well for women (and of course, men) because it is a little heavier, has an nice slim grip for a double stack 9mm and a lower bore access - all contributing to an easily controllable and fun to shoot pistol. if it doesn't do it for you cosmetically thats fine too.

It's a great community. You'll often find people willing to do things like that.
Maybe it's Range Langley you are waiting for if you're in the lower mainland.

I belong to Mission Rod and Gun as well as Abbotsford Fish and Game.
I'd take you to either. I don't have a 9mm yet. One is "pending".

I have revolvers and some semi autos. However, my guns are perhaps atypical.
Send me a PM if you are in the lower mainland and want to try some hardware at either club.
It might be best to wait for the 9mm (Glock 17) but I have a few other options. (.22 magnum, .357 magnum, .45 auto 10mm, .40 S&W)
