Wife and I buying a handgun... Caliber recommendations?

I'm speechless. You are very kind. I'm a hobbyist musician and participate in different forums, no one has ever given me such an opportunity like you just did in more than 10 years. THANK YOU.

All of you guys/girls are and have been great.

We are in BC, thanks for the offer.

Why don't you tell us where you are, you will find many offer the same, anyone who looks at my toys gets a turn if they are respectful, and that is most people in the community.

A steel/metal 9mm (eg the Beretta, Sig 226 or CZ 75/shadow) ... If you haven't considered it, the CZ shadow tends to work very well for women (and of course, men) because it is a little heavier, has an nice slim grip for a double stack 9mm and a lower bore access - all contributing to an easily controllable and fun to shoot pistol.
I really like revolvers but if it has to be a semi-auto, the above statement reflects my recommendation. I have owned the Beretta and CZ Shadow and my son has the Sig (all in 9mm). CZ has a slightly smaller grip out of the box than the other two and is a great fit for a high percentage of hands. I also have the G19 and like it for various reasons but would not recommend it as a first gun over a CZ Shadow. Good luck and have fun! Be sure to let us know what you get. Also happy to have you out to the range and let you try a sample of guns.

This ^^. I do it because it's fun and others have done it for me. I've been able to try a few guns that I thought I wanted and I now know that I am glad I never bought them. I really want to try a SIG Sauer P226. That still hasn't happened for me.

I've also noticed that about pot smokers... :) ..always willing to pass the bud around. Never had anyone ask me if I would like to share their beer, or their coffee, or their...

Shooters are some of the best of the best. Met so many good folks at the range and through CGN.

Not to derail the thread, but this would be a (great ?) idea for a new forum in CGN...folks who want to try a particular gun can post their desires and their locations and others can feel free to PM them if they don't mind linking up. Just a thought...

Indeed a great idea. It could be tough for some who are keen to keep things quiet.

Hello everyone,

She also likes the Glock and Beretta 92fs inox.

Unless your wife has the hands of an Amazon, she is unlikely to be happy with the Glock, and more especially the Beretta. These are full size firearms with wide grips. If she has small hands, she will end up fighting the firearm for a comfortable grip and will take a long time to start shooting accurately. I would instead recommend a Walther, an HK, or a Browning Hi-Power with the black grips. These firearms fit smaller hands wonderfully and she will shoot well right out of the box. Firearms should ALWAYS be bought on fit, not brand or style. Try out several different ones at your local firearms store and check for pointability and comfort. When the firearm fits, you'll know it. As for calibre, I would really recommend both going with 9mm. It readily available and the cheapest of the "real" calibres to shoot. .40S&W can be harsh to deal with recoil-wise for the novice shooter and .45ACP gets expensive fast unless you are reloading. Learn on the 9mm and you'll have an excuse to upgrade into heavier calibres later.

I have a glock 17 and a BHP and I really really don't understand the above comment that the BHP with the black grips fits smaller hands than the glock 17 with the small handgrip back on it??

I have big hands, and use the medium grip on the glock and I find it feels "smaller" in my hand than my BHP does.

For the 2 calibres what you want to do is both get 9mm guns that have 22lr kits available for them. Glock 17, P226, 1911, etc... it's a long list.

But for sure for sure, go somewhere where you can hold a handgun in your hand before buying it. I've owned dozens of handguns and shot 1000s of rounds over 35 years of shooting and I would never buy a handgun of a model I haven't shot before without spending some time holding it in my hand. Sometimes it "just doesn't feel right" in your hand even if it looked like it really would.

Another great 2 calibre option is to get one of the chinese tokarevs that come with both 9mm and tokarev barrels and magazines.

If you are just starting out, you really really really want to have something that is cheap to shoot, 22lr is about 0.08 a shot, tokarev is about 0.20 a shot and 9mm is about 0.35 a shot, give or take.. I can't think of anything else that isn't more pricey than 9mm except maybe .32 acp if you want to get a skorpion

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are beginners and looking to buy a handgun each. She suggested that we get them in different calibers. She also likes the Glock and Beretta 92fs inox. She doesn't know anything about guns (like me) and she chose those two based on looks. They are not super expensive, but they are also not cheap. From what I read it sounds that they are very reliable.

Any recommendations for calibers? A 9mm and a .40? 9 and .45? She doesn't want 22.

Any of you owe guns with your significant other? What works for you or what do you suggest?

Thanks in advance

I have 2 M&Ps. I shoot the 9mm and she shoots the .22LR. We share the AR-15. I'd like a 1911, again a 9mm for me and a .22 for her. It's what she likes and the ammo is (relatively) cheap.

You can't go wrong with a 9mm for both yours & hers, Its about .30 to .34 cents a shot currently, and lots of it around.

9mm Luger - Can't go wrong there.

The 92FS is a great pistol; Glock is awesome too, but harder to shoot for beginners IMO.

Me and my wife asked same question about 16 months ago..Im big guy with construction hands and she is short with hands really affected by arthritis.
Long story short we both get CZ Shadow's with different grips. hand load ammo with heavier bullets and smaler charge - still competition legal.
We did it for economical perspective and having shooting sport in mind. I know that her first choice is Revolver , long barel .357 with .38 SPL option, maybe even 9mm Luger with moon clips...
I'm good with anything what shoot or goes boom. Enjoy, have fun..

My first firearm purchase was an M&P9 by Smith and Wesson. Amazing firearm and you can get entire range kits for $649.99 to $749.99. Comes with Gun, holster, 3 mags, mag holster, speed loader, cable lock, ear plugs, carry case. Very VERY nice kit. Wife enjoys shooting it as well! Looking at Walther PPX M1 Range Kit next. Best bet is go to a gun store and HOLD them. See how they fit in your hand. M&P kit comes with 3 interchangeable back straps. Making it versatile for shooters across a broad spectrum of hand sizes.

KeltecFan if you are on Vancouver Island I can hook you up with a P226 at some point.
