Hi all,
I want to buy my wife a rifle, she enjoys shooting and is not into hunting as such yet. Being a bit of an oppurtunist I thought I should get something that I can use for a lighter hunting rifle as well. The criteria is that it should be fairly light recoil, as well as being able to be used for big bame so it must be greater than .22 caliber.

My choices so far are between .243 Win, .260 Rem., or 7mm-08 Rem. What do you guys think as far a light recoil caliber that would be good for deer, coytoes, etc.

Also thinking of a model 7 or maybe the ruger compact, or ..... you tell me

Thanks

Mine is happy with her .243. You have a great choice of bullets to buy, or reload. From varmiNt hunting to Deer, a good choice.

My wife shoots a Tikka T3 LS 270WSM. She looked at the model 7 but didnt like the fit/feel of it. The 7mm-08 would be good choice. I think the main reason she likes the 270WSM is this rifle was to be my new one and she took it over.....so I bought another for myself! My wife also hunts elk and moose and she shoots the 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds. She spent time at the range with me in the fall of 2004 shooting the rifle. That year she was rewarded for her efforts with her first mulie buck scoring just under 160BC and her cow elk.

260 or 7mm-08 The 243 gets quite wanting when anything bigger than 150lb. game gets in front of you. Expect velocities from factory 100gr. loads out of a 22" bbl to do maybe 2800fps if your lucky, that translates into barley 1200ft lbs of energy at 200yds. Not a potent enough big game cartridge unless you reload or have a 24" barrel. But that's my personal take on things, I suspect others will chime in differently.
BTW my kids use a 7mm-08(ages 8 and 11) loaded with 130gr. speer BT's doing about 2675fps they laugh at all the noise and none of the recoil.
And my Mrs. uses a 270Win. loaded with the now discontinued 100gr. X's doing 3450fps. Going to try the new 110gr. TSX's when ever I can get some, but she's got 200 more X's to burn in the mean time.

Wife's Rifle

Try the Remington Mountain rifle in 7mm08.Light rifle, but not too light. My wife shoots one in .280Rem.,and she's a small girl,so .270 or .280 might be OK for your gal!Good luck!Mur.:)

If you want to go cheaper pick up a Stevens or Savage 30-30 bolt. Not alot of kick and quite accurate also.Should be able to pick one up for $150 to $200.But if you got the cash go with the 257 Roberts.

I bought my wife a model 7 7mm-08 she loves the rifle. My daughter has a .243.Both rifles are used for deer with success but I would lean more to the more versatile 7mm-08.:)
