Wife wants a cow elk - need input

Its not so much about being cheap as it is about fit. She shoots a youth 243 and its fits her great, I shoot a sako A7 in 300wsm and it fits me great. Thanks for all the input everybody I think I smell a 7mm08 in the air.

buy one of the swede sporters from tradex, lots of 6.5's avail for great prices with nice wood and minty bores

I prefer bullets with heavy jackets/bonded, such as Barnes,Accubond, Interbond,Scirocco, etc. I like exit wounds with minimal meat damage

I'm totally set against using match/target bullets with thin jackets for hunting, even if the manufacturer claims for them to be hunting bullets. They have a tendency to literally explode on impact, especially at close range with high velocity calibers.

The potential gained accuracy with these bullets has little meaning for me in a hunting rifle. If I can achieve around 1-1.5 MOA with a well constructed bullet, that's plenty in my books.

When I think of what is referred to as a "DRT" shot, it means the animal collapses at impact, like with a head/CNS shot. I have yet to see that with a double lung/heart,rib only shot. They have either walked, ran or stood there for a while before getting wobbly and falling over.

I certainly prefer to use Barnes bullets on big animals, as well, but I'm not afraid to use more fragile bullets if the impact velocity has dropped off a good amount, and not all match/target style bullets are created equal ;) The reason that I mentioned the VLD is not for the accuracy potential, but simply because they go in a few inches and then literally grenade in the thoracic cavity. If any bullet is going to produce a DRT with a rib/lung shot, that is probably it. The Barnes and similar are about the least likely (I go for bone when using them!). Maybe your experiences with elk dropping at the shot with rib/lung shots would be somewhat different if you tried putting VLD's in the lungs. Just a thought.

here's your answer: Browning "Micro" Medallion or Hunter

I'm short armed, I have a Micro in 7mm-08, love it, fits me very well, short length of pull.

Actually the last few times I've looked on there I can only see a couple decent model 96's. They don't have any of the Husqvarna 1600 series 6.5x55's. They have more 30-06 than anything.
I wish they had a few decent Husky 1600's in 6.5x55. Then I'd buy one!

Your answer right there. She has a rifle she is comfortable with - let her use it. Shoot one of the premuims (Nosler/barnes) and go.

Also ensure she (and you!) know which shots/angles she can take and which she CAN NOT. Good luck.

FYI - not that I don't like the 7/08 or the 6.5 (niece dropped a bif cow moose with one shot with one)

I know she'd be very happy and comfortable with a Sako A7 in 7mm-08! Don't be cheap, splerge a little. You're pretty darn lucky to have your honey as a hunting partner!

My wife (fiance at the time) took over my firstTikka T3 LS 270WSM b/c I wanted her to and she wanted to go hunting...........so after I bought another identical rifle for me.

A Sako A7 would be a fine choice;) or a Tikka T3. For fit the Savage youth or a Remington Model 7
