So I bought a 1187 compact for my wife due to its weight and barrel length. Other shotguns seem to be too heavy for her to hold up.

She seems to like the length with all of the spacers in the stock but she looks a little awkward holding it. She has a larger distance from her thumb to her nose (does that matter?). Also, she has to tilt her head a lot to to the right...

should I keep on fiddling around with shouldering/spacers? Or take her to the range? Or?

Who knows, maybe it works for her, try the range first would be my guess, everyone shoots differently, you wont know if a gun works for you until you try it..

Take her to the store and let her pick one out that she wants. It's nice to be nice, but sometimes the gift card idea works. I thought a 870 was for me until I tried one at the store and it didn't fit. The store was nice to let me shoulder a bunch before I found my fit...she needs to do the same.

Short is not bad as long as she doesn't poke herself in the nose. It makes it easier to swing the gun and if it is too long she will tend to push the gun off her face.

It is preferable to have the gun positioned in her shoulder pocket and no tilt to her head. Her eye should go down the center of the rib.

If she's tilting her head, she's either not holding it properly, trying to use her LEFT eye, or it really doesn't fit her. Any one of which will cause misses and frustration .

I have a lot of faith in the close your eyes, shoulder and look down the barrel.
If too much adjustment is needed, the unit doesn't fit.
Best to find one that fits and be comfortable with it.
