Wifey wants to join me hunting moose. What should I get her?

I'm thinking since she's small, I was looking at the savage axis youth. Likely chambered in 308. She's a decent shot but sensitive to recoil. Any input would be appreciated. I would like to keep it sub $400 until I know if she's into it or not.
 
Ruger American in 7mm-08.
Unless you load, then the 308win reduced loads.

And don't go buying her an Axis.......not if you really care for the woman.

Husbands don't let their wives shoot Axis's.
 
Tikka has a new shortened version out that would be worth a look. .308 seems like a pretty good choice.
 
If I were you I'd look at a used rem 700 BDL in 308, or parker hale, or there's even a win model 70 308 on the EE right now for $500. Not only are you getting a better gun for the money, but as long as the added weight doesn't bother her to carry, it will soak up more recoil than a light flimsy plastic stock. Plus with the wood, just cut it down and slap on a nice recoil pad and you've got a stock that'll fit her better
 
Savage has a Lady hunter model, shorter LOP and different stock design supposedly to provide a better fit for the Ladies. maybe check that out....7-08 or 308 would be good caliber choices.
 
I will check out the ruger American. I'm pretty invested into 308, so I can load her up some softer loads. I was hoping to check out the new axis 2. I have heard mixed reviews of the ruger American. And If I get an axis i would likely get a boyds stock for her. I would love to get a model 70 for her. But like I said, I would like to keep it under 400.

I already have a 30/30 and 32 spl. I'm thinking bolt gun scoped. We hunt cut overs and shots are 100 to 300 yards typically. Sometimes they're real close, but that is the exception to the rule.
 
Do tell, how to you propose to buy her an Axis, then a Boyd's and keep it under $400?
Then a trigger and pewf, you're into Vanguard territory.

if you have to let her go...my wife shoots a 7-08 x bolt micro midas. a caliber she can handle in a rifle that fits her, which i think is key. let us know what you guys decide.
 
I've seen the axis on sale for $289 plus a body's stock for $99 will keep me right around the 400 mark plus I have read on here that a trigger job on the axis can be done on the cheap quite easy.
 
Hmm that seems a little counter productive. I'd rather we spent a couple weeks in camp than spend a couple grand wasting away on a beach each winter in Antigua watching my liver slowly harden into the consistency of a hockey puck.
