Wifey wants to join me hunting moose. What should I get her?

If u really love her u won't buy her a Stevens . Savage mossberg the Ruger should be fine 7mm-08 140 gr of some discripsion and she should be good to go .

the 7mm-08 would be my pick for a modern day gun but if you can find a nice savage 99 in 250-3000 then that would work also with very little recoil.I looked long and hard to find a mint savage 99 I will start my girls with that if they get interested in hunting.Moose are very easy animals to kill and I know of alot off moose that went down with the old 250 savage.

I would echo the recommendation for the Ruger American should one be looking for an inexpensive hunting rifle. Last Summer, I shot a friend's .30-06 at the range and found recoil more on the mild side considering the light weight of that rifle. Very accurate too.

See now, yours is a trick question.
I've been married almost 24 years, successfully, so I know the answer.

Take her shopping and let her pick a rifle.

I would say 308 is a good decision. Load some light stuff for her to practice. The. Load it hot for the hunt and re-zero the scope. That's what I am doing with my girlfriend. I told her that when your shooting at big game you won't feel nothing.

It amazing that when a guys asks "what cartridge should I get for moose" the magnums get the nod and the 7mm-08/308/6.5x55 class of cartridges gets bashed and labelled as too small. Mention the fact you need a moose rifle for a woman...and the opinion changes! Haha! Gotta love internet forums!!! The above mentioned are all good and as someone else pointed out...it is best to let her choose the rifle she wants! BTW...9/10 times letting her get the pink camo with earn you some brownie points!

Serious answer: buy an X-BOLT in what ever calibre YOU want, the recoil pad is so great it takes a huge amount of the recoil out

A couple of sharp knives and some lessons on gutting...

Good frying pan, so she can cook you a lunch in the camp. :0

For a gun, I'd go with Savage Lady Hunter ot T3 Lite in 30 06

If I were you I'd look at a used rem 700 BDL in 308, or parker hale, or there's even a win model 70 308 on the EE right now for $500. Not only are you getting a better gun for the money, but as long as the added weight doesn't bother her to carry, it will soak up more recoil than a light flimsy plastic stock. Plus with the wood, just cut it down and slap on a nice recoil pad and you've got a stock that'll fit her better
This ^^

Go to the Tradex site above and get her a nice commercial Husqvarna 1600 in 6.5X55. If she decides its not for her, the rifle will sell easily, if she likes it, there's no need to upgrade other than cosmetics. Top the rifle off with a fixed 4X scope, cut the LOP to fit her with a decent recoil pad installed, and get her out shooting. My wife loves her Husky 1640 carbine in .30/06, although she prefers the ghost ring and post to a scope.
