Wild Boar Hunting in Hawaii

Have a friend in Texas who has a little ranch. The feral hogs there are a problem, even eat fauns and destroy a lot of vegitation. They do carry parasites, but the cool thing is about 15 minutes away they have a wild cat sanctuary (lions, tigers) that take whole hogs, no gutting required. Hoping to get there someday for some hogs with a handgun. I suggested I'd also like to try spearing one, he said he wouldn't, but offered to sit up in a tree and watch me. :D

My three dream hunts, hogs with a handgun, cape buff, doves in Argentina

Texas hog hunting ROCKS. $45 for the week or $100 & change for a full year licence. I'm going to Basstrop county in March for that. I'm taking the SW357 & a 270 rifle.

Just come to Sask. The wild boars are like rats here. They are a dam nuisance, I've shot 108 in the past 2 winters. The more that are shot the better. They destroy lots of crop and have no natural enemies.

Where-o-where in Sask???? I was born and raised there. Got relatives in Invermay/Sheho/Foam Lake, I still go there to visit. You got 108, I would be happy with just 1 to start with! Where?

I live north of Humboldt, which is East of Saskatoon about an hour and a half. We have a rather interesting amount of hogs out this area. I shot one twenty litterally off of my porch. My buddy I went to school with shot one south of my place about a mile. We have more than that. After deer season the locals go out in the area and bag a surprising amount on a regular basis.

I am 99% certain, no handgun hunting is allowed in Hawaii. :( :( :(

Look what I found, my 1% was right:

What are the laws reguarding the use of handguns for mammal hunting on the Big Island on public lands?

Handgun hunting is legal for wild pigs, sheep and goats in most public hunting areas on the Island of Hawaii normally open to firearm hunting. Handgun hunting without dogs requires a handgun of 357 caliber or larger with a barrel length of 5 inches or longer (4-1/2 inches for single shot pistorls). Smaller caliber handguns are allowed when hunting with pigs or using specialty type hunting pistols that fire rifle type cartridge ammunitions. See regulations 13-123-22(b) and (c) for details.

Go with the handgun!!!!!!!!!!:dancingbanana:

Here are the hunting regs for Hawaii: http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dofaw/hunting/hawmammregs.html

Looks like I started a good post!
Thanks for the Big Island regs.
The idea of hunting with a hand gun never crossed my mind.
Now do I go with a Colt 45 Gold Cup or a S&W 686?
45 in semi auto or .357 revolver....hummmm

Magnum work indeed!

686, with a high preferance for a 629 buddy............;)

PS: On reveiwing the Hawaiian Hunting Regulations graciously pointed out by Silverback, it appears to me that three of the six Hawaiian islands, do allow handgun for hunting of wild pigs, Hawaii, Oahu and Kuaui. In some specific zones.

The following is a copy/paste of what qualifies for a legal hunting handgun there:

(10) No person shall possess or use tracer bullets, bullets with full metal jackets, blow guns, guns powered by compressed gas, animal traps, slingshots, crossbows, poison, explosives or snares. Legal game mammal hunting weapons include rifles, shotguns, handguns, bows and arrows, spears and knives. Only weapons that are authorized for the particular hunt are to be in the hunter's possession, while on the public hunting area.

(11) With respect to the use of handguns and handgun ammunition, the following conditions and restrictions shall apply:

(A) No person under the age of 18 years shall hunt game mammals with a handgun.

(B) Center fire handguns shall have a minimum barrel length of four and one-half (4 1/2) inches for single shot pistols and revolvers and five (5) inches for semi-automatic pistols.

(C) Straight-wall cartridge ammunition shall be 357 caliber or larger with a minimum case length of one and one-fourth (1 1/4) inches (Exceptions: The 10 mm auto mag and 45 win mag cartridges are allowed despite their shorter case length).

(D) Necked rifle-type cartridge ammunition shall be 223 caliber or larger.

(E) All handgun bullets of less than 43 caliber (.429 inch) shall be of the expanding type. Bullets of 43 caliber (.429 inch) which do not expand shall be of the flat-nosed (semi-wadcutter) or round-nosed exposed lead type.

(F) Single or double barreled muzzleloading handguns shall be 44 caliber or larger, have a barrel length of at least nine (9) inches and use at least 60 grains of black powder or equivalent, and use a projectile of at least two hundred (200) grains weight(slug or round ball of 51 caliber or more).

(G) It is prohibited to use any "muzzleloading (black powder type) revolver or smooth bore pistol when hunting without dogs.

(H) Handguns shall not be carried concealed; however, open topped and flapped protective type holsters which cover the handgun handle are allowed. All handguns and holsters must be worn in plain view, external to all clothing or rain gear; and

(I) When handgun hunting with dogs, certain exceptions shall apply as listed in section (c)(1) below

There's more but I left out the part about dogs, spears, motorized vehicles, etc.

I took a boar on Kawaii with a Ruger #1 in 7x57 that was loaned to me by a road construction worker. Didn't mean to do that, but stuff happens when you hang out with the locals. ;)
