My father just got back from his annual boar-hunting trip from Greece.
This year's hunt wasn't as successful as last year's, only yielding about seven boars in total, during the course of six morning hunts.

Their best day produced three boars.

This 17 year-old had a lucky day, shooting two!

One of the three weighed-in at 120 kg.

A customary BBQ for a midday "snack"...

That is one bigger porker on the passenger side of the pick-up. I've only eaten wild boar once as a kid. I don't remember much of it, but I remember that it wasn't gross, so then it had to be good.

Best red meat I've eaten...

They're fun to hunt with spears and crossbows... :)

A few nice sows and a nice big boar

Good hunt Yorgi... I miss boarhunting

MAn them pigs are huge!!!

I watched a show one time where the guide talked about the boars goring his dogs and it didn't make sense that a (what I thought was a little pig) could hurt a dog.

Clear a s a bell now, that would be hair raising hunt with a bow.

Mump,
Bows are crazy, but You should try it with a spear....
Looking at their size doesnt give you an Idea as to how dangerous they can be...
They are the toughest animals on the planet to kill pound for pound IMHO...

Yeah Yorgi... now my blood is up. Nothing like hunting Russian Boar.
How come you didn't go this year?

You're right BigRedd, although my dad really enjoys our annual Ontario moose and deer hunt, he can't wait for December to roll around and go after some pigs!
Because of work, family and a mortgage, the closest I get to his hunt is when I post these pictures :(

Great pics Yorgi. Somehow I never pictured Greece as a hunting Mecca.

What kinds of guns were used, and what method of hunting was employed?

Wild boar are the only large(ish) game animals that can be hunted in Greece. The fact that a season even exists is due to the hard work the local hunters, through their hunting clubs, have contributed.
They identify suitable areas for live-release, hire biologists to table reports and submit them to the government. When approved, they personally pay to capture wild animals from overpopulated areas in Northern Greece and release them in the South. The majority of this work took place in the early 80's, they are now enjoying the fruits (or rather chops...) of their labour.

Rifles and shotguns with rifled barrels are illegal, only slugs and buckshot is allowed. The majority of hunters use 3" Italian semis with Rottweill slugs.

Dogs are used exclusively, no dogs, "no boar for you"!
My father's hunting party is made up of about twelve guys. Three hunters take the dogs and start a drive walking towards the blockers. Any hogs that flush, hopefully head in the direction of the blockers. Most of the times however, the hogs give the dogs a real workout, it's not uncommon for a run to last for a few kms and/or a few hours. All hunters carry radios and the plans are consistently fine-tuned to corner the game.

Awesome hunt! I've never tasted Boar... care to share ;)

That makes two of us mommabear :( Federal regs ban the importation of meats, the only way we both can find out is by flying Olympic Airways, OPA!

Whats the boar on the left saying behind the kid's back?

I think he's trying to bite his ear off for revenge! Either that, or both boars are laughing at the same joke...

Thanks for everyone's kind words. I've enjoyed MANY of other people's posted pics it's great to be able to share!

that looks like fun, but you should do it like a man and hunt them with a knife :);) what was that movie again????? oh yes GET TO THE CHOPPPPER!!!! hahahaah

Hunter orange is obviously not required, although I think that some of those sweaters they're wearing are a little brighter than even orange!

A pic of the skinning at the Hellenic version of the Canadian barn.

That could prove very exciting; thick cover, close range, fast shooting, and the opportunity to get laid open with those tusks!
