Howdy!

I'm looking at getting into Wild Turkey hunting in Eastern Ontario, next summer. My friend is an avid deer hunter, but I've convinced her to try turkey hunting with me in early 2011 :D

Since neither her nor I know what to get for turkeys... any ideas?

12ga comes to mind, but I'm quite clueless when it comes to decent makes/models for shotguns

Thanks!

You don't need any thing to heavy to carry, and usually a single shot will do, so a Pardner Turkey shotgun is all that is needed.

Spring Wild Turkey Hunt.
Bag Limit
1 bearded wild
turkey per licence
2 licences per
hunter maximum.
The two birds may
not be taken on
the same day.

FALL WILD TURKEY

One fall licence per
hunter maximum.
One wild turkey
may be harvested
– EITHER one male
OR one female.

Chewing lead doesn't work for me and after the first shot, the birds don't exactly hang around.

If you want to get a bit fancy, any pump or semi 12ga. with a turkey choke. Of course it'll weigh more. A three barrel set like the 500 Mossberg will give you versitily to hunt everything with. Biggest question is what do you want to spend? A hundred or so on a Full/extra full choke single shot shotgun used or $_____ totally up to you. Your target is the head/neck area within 40 yards, probably closer to 20yds or less in reality and that's why your in camo for it calling them in using a 24" or so barrel.

One shot, one bird, have a nice day.

I am definitely looking to spend very little for the start.
I'm not much of a hunter, so this is actually my intro to hunting on my own. I own rifles and will potentially ride-along this fall, but won't be hunting on my own until next spring.

I'm a big guy, so I'm not too worried about a slightly heavier gun. The 500 Mossberg looks pretty good. I would definitely like to try out some smaller game, so it would apply quite well. My old boss's husband hunts duck and mentioned that he would take me out sometime - I'm assuming the 500 Mossberg would work for duck hunting, too.

The mossberg 3 barrel combo sounds about right for you. You have to use steel shot for ducks, so you have to have a barrel that will take that, one of the mossberg barrels is just the ticket. If you want to bump up the power a bit, the Mossberg 535 3 barrel combo with the 3 1/2" chamber is terrific value at ~$550, you can hunt everything Ontario has to offer
Good Luck!

Mossberg 500, 3 barrel combo - check it out at Ellwood Epps. comes with a 28" barrel, 24"smoothbore and a 24"rifled barrel. Itll do everything you need. It can shoot up to 3" shells. If you wanna shoot 3.5" shells (which isnt really necessary) then you can get the 535 combo for like $100 more.

I think I'm going to lean towards a used 12ga 3" 24-30" barrel gun.

Ellwood Epps has quite a few shotguns that are in my price range (<$300) and seem like they're in good shape. they even have a 30" full choke Mossberg 500.
