Hi, now that I've taken my reloading course I have a real itch for a wildcat cartridge. I happened across info on a 22/30.30 and since I have a bolt action 30.30 laying around, why the heck not.

I do need a little more info though on this cartridge befor proceeding. Anyone had any experience with it?

Thanks, Arch:)

There are many 22 wildcats based on the 30/30, but a bit of warning here!
You may end up over your head for now, I would go with a 30/30 AI for starters, as you use standard brass to fire form.
This is a simple wildcat to work with, and it will give you some experience in handloading non standard cases, and fire forming, etc.
To start off with something like a wasp , you can run into some big obsticles that you have no experience with , and the whole process could end in frustration ( not to mention blownn cases, bolt lugs, personal damage, etc.!!)!!
Much better to start slow and gain experience that way....

If thats a Savage 340 you have, there are .223 barrels for them. I can't remember where I saw them, but it was on line and they where not too expensive. You could also load 100g plinker bullets in the .30-30 and crank up the velosity to over 2800 fps. I have loaded my 340 with 110g Hornady PSP's, to the 2800 fps mark with no problem.

Quit tryin' to scare the newbies, cat!;)

Arch, just so you don't get a shock later, maybe check out what a set of form dies for 219wasp run.... . Plus, you will need a few more tools to work the brass if you don't already have, inside neck reamers for one. For the wasp that is.

Rounds like this are a lot more work, and can be a lot more satisfying.

Hi, is your 30.30 an Ackley Improved? Could I do this and use the 110 grain bullets and still have an effective predator rifle? Is there any data sheets for velocities and trajectories for the 30.30 Ackley using 110 grain bullets?

Thanks for the help gents !!!:)

"Scare the newbies"?? DANG, I scare MYSELF sometimes!!:D
Basicly what happens when you Improve the case is the sidewalls get blown out and the shoulder angle steepend a bit.
You can load using standard data, but I believe there is 30/30 AI data for the 110 as well..
i'll look in my books for you.

There's a reloading course? I don't mean to hijack your thread but please tell me more. PM me if you like.

Thanks

I like wildcats as much as anybody, but it would prolly be cheeeeper to sell the 30/30 and just go buy an SPS in 22/250 or .223 and get the AI treatment to it.

Your basic assumption may need checking; you cannot build a 22/30-30 without replacing the barrel. It is much simpler to retain the original barrel and have the chamber recut to an Improved, hence their attraction.

To build a 22/30-30, you will need an action designed for high pressure cartridges and fitted with a .224 barrel with enough meat in the chamber area for a fairly big case. The simplest way to check out a wildcat might well be to buy a single shot H&R or similar break action in .223 at a nice low price and have your friendly neighbourhood gunsmith rechamber it to the 22/30-30. This is a much simpler way to start into the seductive, expensive, fun, exciting world of wildcats.

Oh, yeah, just a point of information, if it can be done, it already has, every new cartridge is necked up, necked down, blown out, shortened, streched, and generally abused within six monthes of its first appearance on the market. Generally, there is a factory cartridge that will do the same as any given wildcat, but they are so...un-BLING!

Yeah, but then he would have only a SPS in factoryboringAI. What fun is that?;)

Whatever you decide on, it will be a barrel burner. If you do some research you will find that almost every 22-XX (large case) wildcat destroys barrels within as little time as a few hundred rounds.

Cheers

He said he wanted a 30-30 based wildcat. Case capacity would be a grain or two less than the 22-250, which we all know is a real barrel burner....

I didn't say the 700 wouldn't be boring. I think cheeper was the jist of it and the fact that when he gets bored with it he can pull of the bbl and still have a 700 action to further play with. :)

I always thougth the 30-30 based 22's where sorta silly in this dy and age.

Not long ago I re-read an old Handloader where Stan Trzonic (sp?) built a 219 Donaldson Wasp....

The effort and cost was insane. I kept wondering "why not just buy a 223?":bangHead:

I think bolt action 30-30's are pretty cool, what brand is yours? And are you selling?
