Had the chance to sleep in this morning and was floating in and out of sleep and dreamed of necking the 9.3x62 case down to .264 or .308. I'm not planning on doing this but it was an interesting dream and wondered if any one has done this and what were the results?

I make 9.3x62mm brass out of 30-06 cases (which are 7.62x63mm in metric). I have mountains of 30-06 from the range and no 30-06 in my collection (yet). I convert it to 8x57mm and 9.3x62mm (and possibly soon 9.3x57mm).

I don't know of a common wildcat off the top of my head based on the 30-06 that is 6.5mm (.264") but for high velocity there is the 25-06 but I've read it's a barrel burner.

Cheeseburger, you are not the first to dream. :)

The Hawk line of wildcat cartridges is based on the 9.3X62 case. They take advantage of the almost five grain greater capacity of the '62 case over the 30-06, and are marketed by Z-Hat In the US.

The shoulder on the 62 is almost a tenth of an inch further up the body than the 06, plus the diameter at the shoulder is greater. This is the main reason the 9.3X62 outperforms the 35 Whelen by so much, and any wildcat on the 62 case does the same over the corresponding calibre based on the 06 case.

Having said that, like most wildcats, the expense of building one eventually culminates in the very low return on investment when the day finally comes to sell it.

However, we are rifle loonies....and we dream.

use the readily available, and cheaper 280Rem brass, blow the shoulder forward, fatten to minimum body taper, and Bob's yer Uncle

I think the max case capacity of the -03 cartridge family is maxxed out in the 280 brass.

Ted - Thank you for the explanation. I know it isn't worth it to me(I'm not rich!) or most to wildcat something like that but our brains do funny things when they start dreaming. Your post allowed me to wrap my head around a few things, lol.
