Wilderness carry shotgun

sounds like

- go to dlask or NEA and get a 14 inch barrel so its super easy to carry

-maybe go to seals action gear, get a shotgun scabbard and a butstock zip on shellholder so you never forget/have to worry about having the only 5-6 rounds youll ever need if you ever do use the thing

Check the exchange on a regular basis, short barrels show up every so often. I recently picked up a 70's Wingmaster with 30" barrel and a few days later bought a 12.5" barrel.

The 870 will work well for what you need it for.

I have quite a nice '70s vintage 870 Wingmaster with a fixed modified 2-3/4 barrel without vent rib and a fleur de lis wood stock that my uncle gave me and likely won't see much use. I could use that as a starting point.

forgot to say: before you spend a dime, why not just cut/crown the barrel yourself, and install a fiber optic bead? (if you dont know how, the 'AGI - building the fighting 870' covers this in detail, you can buy it from their site or download it online) you can EE the stock - mine in mint condition sold for $100 - and pick up something from Hogue, Speedfeed, etc. id stay away from the collapsible stock unless you want to reduce recoil for your wife/daughters, and in that case try a Knoxx. youll just about be able to build it for free. youll end up with something like this, which is all you really need:

i wouldnt even really bother with the 3" conversion - 2 3/4" is all you need in a 'defense' gun.

I was going to write an articulate, well thought out reply but then I thought "What the Hell, this pretty much nailed it..."

Mike, just as a point of reference, and to throw more into your thought process...

Here's two of mine

First one is an 870 with a collapsable stock and a Dlask 12 inch barrel.
Second is a Hatsan Optima semi-auto with folder and 18 inch barrel.

You can see that they are virtually the same size, but the Optima will give you the extra barrel length and semi action.

Now, this is of course disregarding stuff I said in my first post about not wanting stuff to get caught on your gear like pistol grips etc.

Just thought I'd toss it out there as more food for thought for you.

Is that the NEA adapter on the 870? What's the OAL with the stock collapsed? That looks pretty handy!

There are a lot of ###y shotguns out there. Why not own one? My advice is sell yours in the EE as is and build something like #### Proenneke's Remington 870 Police Magnum as listed below (but pick and choose through these excellent "upgrades" to make it your own) It's a good starting point... Enjoy the photo!

- Rem 870P w/ 14" police barrel - Price is whatever you can find one for. The 14" 870P is fairly rare these days. Wolverine is your best place to look, or order.
- Hogue short LOP stock and standard fore end.
- Vang Comp System Full Vang Comp System, includes back boring barrel, long forcing
cone and ports $255.00
- VCS - Stainless Steel Magazine Follower $22.00
- VCS - Oversize Safety $15.00
- Vang Comp Systems - Front Sight - Tritium (silver solder on) $140.00
- Vang Comp Systems - Rear Sight with integral Picatinny Rail $195.00
- Installation (drill & tap rear, install front) $75.00
- Mesa Tactical Aluminum 6 shot for Remington 870/1100/1187 $65.00
- Teflon Coat Parkerize base with Grey/Black Teflon on top $245.00

I personally run a 12ga Mossberg 590SP with combat sights, Israeli Combat Systems slide grip with pat 1913 rails to which is attached surefire illumination. The buttstock is hogue - I prefer the grip. Plus if, for what ever reason, there are casualties I have 12ga starlight flares to alert medical heli-evac to my location. The 12ga shotgun has a lot to go for it. Not only for personal defence but survival applications as well.

I find the ballance point is easy to grasp and comfortable to hold (just forward of the action when loaded). This is important because if you've been fighting through the bush with a rifle that is cumbersome to hold you will feel it in your shoulders and neck at the end of the day.

Most important. STAY AWAY FROM PISTOL GRIPS AND FOLDING STOCKS!

I've put about 800 slugs through this shotgun and I've never had a failure to feed nor have any parts or pieces come loose or fallen off. I maintain it religiously, always keep it clean and the internals greased up. I've fired this shotgun in the field without hiccup even with dirt and conifer needles fouling the action. The tubular magazine capacity is 8 rounds of 2 3/4" slugs and I can chew through that amount of ammo very very quickly with this fast handling platform.

I am completely convinced that this shotgun is the best bear defence platform in Coastal British Columbia. However, I'm not sure how she would handle in extreme sub zero conditions - probably not very well. Certainly I would not have the action greased up - I'd run her dry. Worst case scenario you can attach a C7 Bayonet onto these suckers.

I hear wonderful things about the Remington 870 as well, but my experience is with mossbergs. The Mossberg is criticized because the extractor is smaller than the 870. I think this is a mute point as the mossberg has TWO extractors (one on each side of bolt). The Mossy also has a plastic trigger guard but again I've had no issues what so ever with any parts and components. Quite affordable and durable. We have walked many many kilometres in the bush together and I have complete confidence in this shotgun.

When I am hiking/camping out in the bush, I always bring my Norinco 97-1 (870 clone) along for bear/predator repellant. (cost: $250) I replaced the cheesy and spindly folding stock with a nice Remington walnut version, and I'm very happy with it.

I'm looking for a cheap camp/bear gun too,and have settled on the Maverick 88 Security. Basic 12 guage,18 inch plain barrel, $219 at Wholesale. Haven't seen anything in that price range to beat it,so I think it's what I'll get. Anyone try BuckHAmmer slugs in a smoothbore? Looks like a good slug, if it doesn't tumble right out the bore.
