I have come across a "smart" grouse for a change!

This guy was a survivor of a small group that I found about 2 weeks ago. I took three of them, and one flushed and disappeared.

This week I went back to the spot, as sometimes a grouse will hang around it's little area, and only move a couple hundred yards. I was with a friend who had a pointer, and we flushed that grouse again, but didn't have a shot. Couldn't find him again.

I went back a third time, approaching from the direction of his favorite escape route, and flushed him again - but as he went to the side my partner was on, I didn't swing on him. No shot resulted again.

If he's going to stay in that patch, I'm going to keep working it, and see if I can get a shot at him! If he's able to pass on his genes, no-one will get a grouse again around here! He seems uncannily good at keeping trees between himself and me as he wings away.

Never thought 1 stupid grouse would present such a challenge, but I'm having some fun with this one. It's getting personal

how do you know it's the same one??

IF you are hunting with a pointer, make sure you walk up the point from the front of the dog, with the grouse between you and the dog. This way it can only fly right or left, giving you a good shot. Make sure your partner is behind you so you don't have to worry about him. That's how my friend and I do it.

You sound like the groundskeeper and the gopher in Caddyshack.

Give him a pass, let him breed.

Naaahhhhhh  He's ridiculing YOU,I say KILL him with a vengence  ,Then EAT HIM & enjoy him,you gotta show him who's boss and show his friends too

He's got a relative in Ontario. On our 30 acre bush lot there is one grouse that is found in a particular spot. I've seen him on the ground while walking the dogs and when he flushes it's usually straight down a path. If I'm out with a shotgun however he's nowhere to be found or flushes so deeply into the under brush that a shot is impossible.

I'm starting to feel like Elmer Fudd. Be vewy, vewy quiet. I'm hunting gwouse.....

It IS getting personal.

Well you western lads need to come out to Ontario where ALL of our grouse are like that, and if you shoot one per season (LUCKY BEGGAR!) you have to use the special grouse tag that you buy from the Ministry, and take it in to be weighed and measured at a Ministry Office.

Personally, I think it's your shotgun. It is trying to get used to the west coast air .................

There could be some truth to that ....
I'll let you know if I can ever get to pull the trigger on this little bugger.
You might need to give me a refund on this crowbar! It's defective!

I went back today for the fourth time now, and he was no where in sight. Might have been still roosting, as I went much earlier in the day and it was chilly out.

'Cause I'm sure I can hear him laughing at me when I give up and head out of the pines!

Haggis, maybe you better come help me out with this guy, since you have all that pheasant shooting experience, you know

I'm giving it till Thanksgiving weekend.

If I haven't got him by then, I will declare a temporary truce and take it out on his relatives next year.
