Will a 1/2-28 brake be good for a unthreaded 5/8 muzzle.

Hey there, I have a unthreaded barrel that measures 5/8 inches . Would a 1/2 inch brake be good to go ? If I have to have the barrel turned down from 5/8 to 1/2 inch , will this have any negative effect on anything? Thanks for any opinions. The brake is a Holland 1/2x28.

I had Triaiq when he ran a shop thread my 308 S&L barrel installed in a Pattern 14 rifle to 1/2-28mm then bore out the exit hole of the 23 CAL Jerry Mecluk 3 chamber brake for 30cal.

You're good. But you will need to have the barrel done on a lathe. It will need to have the end turned down to a couple of thou less than 1/2 and then threaded. You can't just jam the 5/8's end into a 1/2 inch die.

The need for the thread to be truly axial and centered with the bore also says that it needs to go in a lathe. Especially with the need to remove that 1/16 inch of metal per side.

The good news for you is that the shoulder produced by turning the barrel down to the thread size is nigh on perfect.

The brake is a 30 cal brake but it's meant to thread onto a 1/2 muzzle ? I'm guessing as its a 1/2x28. My muzzle , which measures 5/8 and is unthreaded at the moment , can be made to fit this brake?

so fiction wise it's ok, the muzzle being turned down from 5/8 to a 1/2? I know you can't jam a 5/8 into a 1/2. Not steel anyway:)

Maybe I explained it wrong or I'm understanding it wrong. The Brake has a 1/2 inch thread , so I'm assuming it's meant for a 1/2 threaded barrel? My barrel, which is unthreaded measures 5/8 inches. So I'm assuming (again) that a 5/8 brake would fit . But if I have the smith turn my barrel down from 5/8 to 1/2 will this have any negative effects on the barrel? Or should get a brake that measures 5/8? Thanks

Your could bore and thread the brake to 5/8-18 and thread the barrel to suit. Or get a brake with a 5/8-18 thread, thread the barrel to match.
Or you could turn the barrel and thread it 1/2-28 and install the brake that you have.

Best practice is to set the barrel up in the lathe, centered on the bore. Do the threading. Install the brake. Bore the brake to the proper diameter while it is on the barrel. This way, the bore and brake will be truly coaxial.

If the barrel were mine, I would thread it for 5/8, and install a matching brake.

I assume that the Holland brake you have is for an AR, if it was made with 1/2-28 threads.

Not sure what it's for, was told it's good for my barrel. I have no issues getting my barrel turned down to 1/2 , as long as it don't interfere with accuracy.

A Holland brake is a good brake. When I mentioned AR use, I was thinking about the diameter of the bullet passageway.

As Robert has pointed out, 5/8-18 is more common for .30 rifles. You could easily sell the 1/2-28 Holland, and get a 5/8" .30 brake.

Yep, me too.
IMO, .500" makes a thin muzzle for a .308 bore.
Yes, you can do it, but you have a .625" muzzle then a much bigger shoulder in that pic you posted.
yes the shoulder is .960 but that shouldn't make any diff as its only the tip /threaded area will need to be turned down 1/6 to make it fit the 1/2 inch threaded brake. I would sell it and get another but I just got this one.

If the shoulder is .960", a brake that is much smaller in outside diameter looks a bit odd.
I would be inclined to get a 5/8-18 brake, 1" OD, and turn it to match barrel diameter.
