will a .223 be big enough for deer???

EDIT: Sorry about the .303 recommendation, that calibur is illegal in southern ontario, but if your up near me it isn't. Just thought I would point that out.

Actually Northwoods, anywhere that has the caliber restriction in southern Ontario has no rifle season for deer anyway (shotgun, muzzle-loader or bow only). If he can use a rifle, he's hunting in a non-caliber restricted area, so the 303 is a fine idea, a lot better than 223 Rem.

Sure pays to "read" your regulations doesn't it? ;)

Edited: more spelling mistakes....grrrr

Well I was unaware of that as I never had my hunting license when I lived in southern ontario, my buddy used his 12 gauge with buckshot for deer down there so I figured anything over .270 was not allowed down there in the rifle range of things. My bad.

And if I lived there today I would have known this

If I lived where Northwoods is, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the caliber restriction regs either. He is probably a 12 hr or more drive from where he would have to worry about it. I hunt a few properties that are in a 20 min drive of each other, half are in a caliber restricted area, the others are not restricted, so I need to know that reg.

Sorry guys I was at work trying to type up my reply quickly between customers, I will go back and edit my post.

Anyways if anyone wants to compare ballistics data, of a 223, 243, 30-06

After a brief chat with my dad on the topic, he told me that he wouldn't use a 233 if he was a beginner. He said .270 or .308. He also said he wouldn't recommend a .243 either.

As I metioned above, if I lived where you are, I wouldn't pay it much attention either.

will a .223 cut it?

used a hand loaded .22-250 for years on vancouver island. its all about bullet placement. ALWAYS worked UNDER 100yds. I would borrow a .30-30 if in eastern hard woods,. open country, a .243 /.260/.270/280 until you KNOW you can control your emotions on those first hunts. that said, its still about bullet placement. GOOD LUCK POPS on the big island. p.s. stopped in at my daughters home in COURTENAY B.C. had a big doe and a 4 point buck (8POINT EASTENER) having lunch on her flowers. :p

msg.drew, that is a very nice stock set up on your 870. Although I'm not into thumbhole stocks, I do like laminated. I also have a Remington 700 VLS in .223, and it is one accurate rifle.

Which WMU do you hunt in Ontario?

After discussing this topic with a couple of my cousins who I will be deer hunting with, they informed me that I didn’t even need to worry about the .223. I will be pushing the bush, so they told me id be better off with a shot gun anyways, so I guess its decided, i will leave my varmint blaster at home. Thanks for all the input.
