Just a quick question.

I have an old Mauser k98 that I am going to be fixing up. The previous owner really screwed up the stock and I need to get a new one to get it back to the original military look.

I'm just wondering if any of the Mauser experts can tell me if a K98 will fit into an M43 stock?

If you mean a spanish mauser M43, yes K98 action should be fine, they are both large ring actions but if the K98 have the bent bolt, the M43 stock may need modification since K98 have the stock carved to accomodate the bent bolt handle.

yes it is a spanish M43 that i am looking at.

I am under the impression that is would not be that hard to modify the stock to fit the bent bolt, particularly if I knew people with woodworking abilities?

I'm new to any kind of modifying and gunsmithing things here, especially with milsurps.

Nope not hard to do modification but have you tried to source a K98 stock? EE, Trade-ex,Marstar just to name few?

The Spanish M43 stock could be made to work but there are several problems with it. The stock is not relieved for the bent bolt of a k98k, the handguard is totally different and won't work with the K98k rear sight, and the barrel channel will have to be altered to fit around the K98k's rear sight as well. Far easier to get a proper K98k stock.

What year is your K98k?

98K stocks are near impossible to find. Been doing the shows, including yesterday, since 85 and havn't seen one for sale in a decade. Couple Turks, Carcano a P-14 no 98K or GEW98.
I am looking for one or two, too.

I'm not entirely sure what year the mauser I have is. I do know it has a flat-end butt stock. as for the markings, they have all been filed off. I'll post some pictures when I get home today.
It's in pretty rough shape but I think it is still shootable and will clean up nicely if i take the timeto do it. If its not worth fixing maybe someone could advise me.
Pics later.

Not online they arent.

They are on ebay pretty much weekly, as well as several european websites selling, matching stocks/handgaurd/bands.......

Pm me for details.

here are some of the photos of the K98 that I have. Obviously the previous owner really butchered the stock and had not taken care of it at all. never cleaned and put away wet etc.

Maybe someone could give me advice on cleaning it up a little.

Has the barrel been chopped? Either way you're missing the front sight base. The rear sight base will not retain a k98 handguard.
Bolt has been bent. M43 should be straight.
Imho that gun is rough. I'd go at it with brass wool and varsol, I wouldn't expect it to clean up too much. Looks pretty much in the white.

^^^WOW!^^^

I would let that barreled action sit in a barrel of diesel for few days methinks... That's some serious rust it has going on... The stock is definitely junky!

Gotta love how the previous owner took a grinder to the bolt handle, most likely to get it to clear a scope??

Looks like it's a Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal made Mod 98 of some type. Is it in 8mm? 30-06? It had a side mounted scope of some type it looks like too, perhaps a Jaeger Mount? No front sight, but has a stepped military barrel... Does it still have the rear sights? The bolt looks like it's been bent too, and the stock notched out for it.

That is really a dogs breakfast... I would clean it up best you could, sand and shape the stock, and keep it for a truck gun, I don't think it's really worth restoring or dropping any money into it whatsoever. But that's only IMHO. Also, unless you intend to shoot it like a shotgun without the front sight, or solder some sort of front sight base on it, or perhaps reinstall some sort of scope mount, it's not much use as it is right now.

Cheers!

Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal made Mod 98 That is indeed the only recognizable identification on the entire gun. I had to use solvent and steel wool to find the ID, and as for the caliber, I have no idea. The front and rear sights are both missing and so will have to do something about that.

Well it looks like a Belgian made M98 that was rebarreled to .30-06 at one time. The front receiver ring has been notched out for the longer cartridge. Is it still in .30-06? Could be a Columbian contract rifle. The bolt handle would have been bent originally and someone has taken a grinder to it to clearance the side mounted scope it had on it at one time.

Not worth restoring IMHO, but if the bore is good it could still make a good hunting rifle.

I was thinking not necessarily doing a perfect restore, but more of do what I can to make it look decent (compared to what it currently is) put a new stock on get the rust off and clean up the barrel, look at getting some new sights etc.

Someone before mentioned the previous owner taking a grinder to it. I noticed that too and although it looks really bad i doesn't seem to show signs (to me anyway) that is was a power grinder. It looks more like it was a hand file of some sort as I cant see and heat marks of any kind (then again I'm untrained as to what heat marks would look like.)

How much money do you want to spend? As long as the bore is good, there is no deep pitting on the action or barrel, and no significant wear, it could be turned into a fine hunting rifle.
