Will all hunting rifles be AR or AK type clones one day?

Will the traditional bolt gun fade from the market place, or disappear all together? To be replaced by the modern semi-auto? Talking about the distant future here folks.
Certainly if you attend big shows like Shot, you can see that the black gun side of the show has grown to much larger than the sporting side already.

So what do you think? Will your grand kids hunt with an AR because new sporting rifles are ALL black rifles?

I don't think that the AR wave will ever truly be able to catch up to the traditionals. Remington has pumped out millions of 700's, not to mention Tikka, Savage, Sako, Browning, Mossberg, Anschutz, Kimber, Christensen, etc. There is definitely a strong following for the "black and greens" and I would hunt with one if given the opportunity, but you couldn't pay me enough to lose my bolt rifles!!

Since both are restricted and the RCMP will keep them so for the foreseeable future there is little chance of them becoming mainstay hunting rifles in Canada. They are becoming popular because more and more gun owners are not primarily hunters and so are looking at other types of firearms for recreational use, a trend I have no issue with as the more gun owners there are the better.

I hate to say it.....but in the distant future , I doubt if there will be any semi automatics in Canada if the RCMP and the anti-gun groups get their way......

Look will never be the deciding factor in a hunting rifle, top accuracy will, so i dont see the bolt action being replaced ever... JP.

I'd love to go for coyotes or gophers with an AR, but for big game it would always be a bolt.

This. The AR is damn near the ideal coyote rifle. With a different upper it may be suitable for deer, but I don't see it taking over the top of the pile from the bolt action. We have a fair selection of semi autos available for hunting already and yet the bolt is still the best seller.
That aside I'd buy a couple AR's in a heartbeat if they let us take them in the woods.

actually i think quite the opposite ... at the rate they're taking our freedom away and removing all our wealth, it'll push just about everyone to be behind a semi

and besides.. how much accuracy do you need to hit a moose or deer under 100 yards ? ( that all said, i love all my rifles with nice walnut... thats hunting with style )

When I bought my AR, I purchased it in Winnipeg, drove south through Warroad, Minnesota and came through Canada at Rainy River. Not one hiccup travelling with it. US Customs asked that I take the bolt out, that's all. I brought it home and took it hunting several times as well as many range visits.
Within 4 years, it went "Restricted".
As for the popularity of black rifles, I wouldn't say it's a fad, but a market that a lot of retailers are jumping on. As with everything, it will peak and saturate.

Not all, but many. Not surprising considering how military rifles of the day often become popular hunting rifles. I'm planning on buying a KelTec RFB for thick timber blacktail hunting. The rifle is so compact it's like a modern Mdl94 carbine.

Plus I like the political aspect of using a. " black gun" for hunting. :)

Cost could be versatile but accuracy is non negotiable... JP.

Depending on what is your priority. Lots of hunters out there with Winchester and Marlin levers as well as Remington pumps. They are not the most accurate rifles out there but they make fine hunting rifles.

I do not think the bolts Wil be completely replaced but they will definitely drop in numbers. 7.62x51 ".308" black rifles will definitely be on the rise If our anti gun rcmp and politics do not get in the way. Polymer is the natural evolution of wood although I still have a place in my heart for wood stock bolt guns

Outside of the US, they're really not that popular and certainly not used much for hunting.Seeing as we can't hunt with AR's here, that leaves the US. They would also have to be chambered in some bigger calibers that aren't derivatives of the 308 or 223. Tactical firearms are the latest craze these days, and there are tons of manufacturers catering to those consumers, but I haven't seen that trend bleed over to the hunting community, certainly not big game. I can't see them ever replacing bolt guns for hunting.
