Will all hunting rifles be AR or AK type clones one day?

But we may never see that again, unless Canada grows a set of balls or the UN changes it's mandate of member nations destroying all their surplus firearms rather than reselling them to the people as in the past. Right now we aren't even eligible to get the Ranger's 303's when they're phased out over the next four or five years. (Or however long it takes the government to get it's act together on buying a freakin 308 bolt rifle)

I was told this week by 1CRPG that the new Ranger 308 is on the way.... they have been saying that for a few years though so not holding my breath.

I asked about buying my issued 303 (as I always do) and the response was that it is a possibility.

I think the next generation of ARs will come with a magwell large enough to accomidate .308 derivative cartridges, but with inserts or adapters to use smaller magazines. Really there's no reason why you couldn't swap out a magwell adapter to use a single lower with multiple uppers of drastically different calibers, or just different barrels and BCGs.

As mentioned before, it has been a longstanding practice of the military firearms rising to prominence in the civilian world. Military has the big money, they can pay for the billions of dollars of R&D to perfect a platform, and then as patents expire or technology marches on those designs get passed on to the civilian world.

Remember folks, the Mauser is tacticool. You can guarantee that back when Mauser was the new hotness there were a bunch of guys with muzzleloaders or single shot rifles saying that it's just a phase, nobody needs more than one shot, and that weapons of war have no place on the hunting field.

We're at the point where even the cheapest Chinese knockoffs of ARs can, with less than a single afternoon, have more than acceptable hunting accuracy. Many of them even have it off the shelf.

Medium grade ARs quite often seem to have accuracy and performance on par, or in excess of, medium grade bolt rifles.

Imagine if, as happened after WWI and WWII, after the Middle East there were millions of soldiers coming home with ARs flooding the markets.

Will the traditional bolt gun fade from the market place, or disappear all together? To be replaced by the modern semi-auto? Talking about the distant future here folks.
Certainly if you attend big shows like Shot, you can see that the black gun side of the show has grown to much larger than the sporting side already.

So what do you think? Will your grand kids hunt with an AR because new sporting rifles are ALL black rifles?
I'm not a fan of black firearms, and should hope that the bolt action rifle will not fade away. Family members who hunt do not favor, own or even talk about black guns, therefore I think my grandchildren will be "safe" from utilizing such a thing.

AR is very outdated together with AK. The only way they are keeping afloat is that strange "tacticool" mirage which feeds hundreds of small us shops doing "best and custom AR" which are virtually the same outdated kit. But its been around for so long that somehow no one notices how bad they are.

If anything decent comes in at a decent price it smokes all ARs out of the water - Tavor for instance or Sig 550. Which are on themselves are very basic military weapon = cheap and simplistic.

But as for hunting if anything modern and well designed as Blaser R8 comes for a reasonable price the "custom hunting AR" would stand no chance. Its like super tactical Rem 700 in .308 against a modern 338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifle - no contest.

If Ar's were legal to hunt with in Canada I'd say yes....as far a accuracy I saw a article in I think it was Pederson Hunting testing 5 varmint rifles....only one was a AR type rifle, the rest were bolt gun, the AR was the most accurate of the bunch, averaged around 1/2inch with various loads.
Its a pity they are restricted here!

Myself I see other action types rising in price as the popularity of them decreases in favor of black rifles. They won't I hope disappear, but may become too pricey for many of us.

Support other action types simply by buying them. And Piss off a Liberal today! :)

Youth don't hunt today in numbers to even back fill what we are losing every year as us old farts die off. Last report I seen said the average age of a hunter is over 45 in Canada and that was probally 7 years ago so young black rifles will not be doing much hunting
I just have to look at NS in 1985 almost 100,000 big game licences sold now in 2012 like 36,000 of which 30 % were free over the age of 65 end users
We are a dying breed down east and much quicker than I ever thought
Cheers

Its up to those who still shoot and hunt to teach and mentor the young. Hunting and shooting, like bolt guns will never die.

Seriously most of the youth down east want nothing to do with hunting and see us as cave men. 9 boys this generation between my brothers and zero interested in firearms or hunting despite all their fathers were die hards
Daughter did a study / paper on this in her last year of high school. Three years ago
258 grads 4 had ever held a gun and shot it or hunted and I think another 4 wanted to some day
Most of the friends she has won't eat meat let alone kill to get it
World has changed unfortunately , in fact I have no one in the family to leave my firearms to which I would never have imagined. When the old man passed years ago we had a line up for them not today
Cheers

Well out here I see a lot of young people expressing interest in hunting. My son and daughter are both hunters and love it. A friend of mine puts on hunter safety course every spring and fall and has no problem filling his classes. Maybe being out here in butt **ck Manitoba and being a farming community makes the difference. I dunno!!!!

Good to hear but in the big picture we are losing ground every year

Firearms sales are growing and the Liberals and NDP will be taking it all away from us because Canadians are stupid ####s that would rather give up freedoms for some BS carrot dangled in front of them... Canadians Love spending money on needles crap and over social spending by baby sitting dictators; that stab us in the back and we bloody just beg for more!... d:h::bangHead::stirthepot2::nest::jerkit:

Though many para/military style rifles will hit the bush, the traditional bolt, lever, pump, single shots and
early auto's will always have a following. Hell, look at what cowboy action shooting has done for renewing
interest and sales of pioneering type firearms & cartridges.

If we had an "Empire Shootist Society" going using any rifle action and sights from 1880-1918, we would see
a huge interest in milsurp, target & sporting rifles from this era as well. That would be very cool.:)

I would be quite happy with a new, Uberti made Martini Henry in .32-40 Winchester for a 200 yd. off-hand rifle.
;)

I can not wait to throw all the lever/ bolt gun guys under the bus so the anti gunners will leave my AR's and pistols alone.

With a comment like that you will have a lot more than some anti gunners to worry about. No wonder we are so divided today but you will be the 1st one crying help me lads. Unreal
