Will brake cleaner affect BBQ paint on an sks?

Hey guys, I just got my sks in the mail today and it is coated in cosmoline as expected. I know brake cleaner is great for removing the stuff but will it ruin the BBQ paint coating? I haven't been able to find much information on this so any help is greatly appreciated as I'd like to go shooting as soon as the gun's clean.
 
Depends if it's paint, or parkerized. Paint will most likely get stripped, parkerizing migh be tougher. Solvent has no effect on my black finished sks, it will however strip the finish on the bolt carrier. I suspect the rifle is parkerized or at least baked on, the bolt carrier is just painted.

Does some Bolt carrier were made of stainless at one time? Because mine isn't painted nor parkerized :s

It ruins the finish but I've found it damages the metal and seems to make it brittle too.

Yes I know it's used on metal breaks.

I've seen a marked difference in someones AR15 when they repeatedly use break cleaner to clean it and when they use oil or CLP to clean it.

No just bare steel. Keep it oiled or I'tl rust.

It will absolutely not effect the steel. Some coatings may be effected. But no steel will magically turn brittle from it.
 
I decided to use a degreaser and some windex with hot water and it worked pretty well. I think I will stick with that to save the finish and the metal. My rifle wasn't too badly coated in cosmoline so it came off easy.

Don't need brake cleaner, use boiling water and dish soap. the cosmo will melt and run right off, no need to use harsh stuff :)
