Will remington ever fix the 597 magazine designs so they are as reliable as a 10/22?

When i had mine it was next to impossible to get any more than 6 in the 10 round mag. Ended up filing the extruding grooves the plastic follower travels in and was able to easily get 8 in, 10 was so much of a struggle i gave up, with magazine and gun.

I have had my 597VTR for over 6 years, in the process I have fired more than 12,000 rounds. I have not noticed any issues with the magazines, not the 3 X 10 round nor the 2 X 30 round magazines I have.
Maybe thats not what people want to har, but that is my experience.

I had a new 597 for 2 weeks. Two trips to the range, two trips home frustrated, one trip to the gun shop to trade it in on another gun. Never again. Some guys post having good results with them but most I've talked to had the same issues.

I just picked up a 597. It's not the end-all by any means but for $239 with a scope I couldn't complain.

I find that I can get 9 in a magazine and it's a good day if all 9 feed without a problem. I've only got 300 rounds through it so far and blamed the cheap Federal Premium ammo I have been using.

From what I've heard the overall quality is very hit-and-miss with these guns. I'll keep mine for a little while and see what happens.

^This^, how such a good budget gun could have such crappy mags is beyond me.

My 597 is 100% reliable with all the mags I have for it. A pair of 10 rounders, and a 30 round. They all load to full capacity just fine, too.

Dunno what people are having issues with.

I've only ever had issues with the 30 round magazines. I went through 6 before they became targets.

The factory 10 rounders all worked fine however. 10 rounds in, 10 rounds out.

Also keep in mind that there are 3 generations of the factory 10 round magazines. A quick google search will show you the difference. The 3rd gen are what you want, they are easily identified by a circled '3' on the right side of the magazine. If you have anything other than a 3rd gen you may be able to get remington to replace it for free. They were doing that when they released the upgraded magazines, can't say if they're doing that anymore.

Three of them in my immediate family now. All flawless so far....
Brother in law has the standard with a scope package, uncle has the magnum version and I recently acquired the 16" heavy barrel in an OD green stock. 0 issues with any of them and my heavy barrel was $30 cheaper than a basic Ruger. I just picked up a couple of 30 rounders, we'll have to see how that goes, but all in all I've been somewhat impressed by them so far considering the price point.

Does anyone besides Remington make a 25 or 30 round mag for these yet? Butler Creek or someone? Just curious, all I see are the clear Remmy's.

My sister's pink camo 597 takes eight out of ten rounds... And honestly, has been a thousand times more reliable than my Savage bolt action .22lr rifle...

Good to know, I'm going to check my mags when I get home and see if they're the 3rd generation magazines.

The one I had the factory 10 rd mag usually would only hold 8 rounds. The 30 rd mags were an absolute pain to load and I had to break out the Dremel to get them so they would fit properly in the mag well. That gun was the absolute worst piece of #### rifle I have ever laid my hands on.

Have two in .22 LR and a .22 magnum and no issues at all with the current generation mags. All guns have the Volquartsen hammer and extractor upgrades and are great shooters.
