will sacrifice all for durability

I run a nightforce 2.5-10x32 on my hunting rig and I love it! I have the npr2 reticle and exposed zero stop turrets. I have never "bumped" my turrets while hiking and with the zero stop it takes 1/2 a second to confirm where you are if your worried about it. The reticle isn't too busy at all and it is useful for quick holdovers or wind holds. The thing is built like a tank. 2.5x will work inside 50 yards and 10x is enough for me to consistently touch a 12'' plate @ 900yards. If you can stretch the budget a little i don't think you can go wrong. I believe mine was a little over $1400 brand new.

I second the Bushnell Elite Tactical. I have the 6-24 with the G2DMR reticle, and love it. That video torture test is what sold me on it.

As unpopular as this suggestion seems to be these days, I think the fact remains that for hunting at the ranges you are envisioning (or for that matter at 3 or 4 times those ranges) a quality scope topping out at 9 or 10 power will let you make any shot that presents itself in your lifetime. Frankly, even a fixed 4 or 6 power will do that. You don't need or want 56mm objectives, parallax adjustments, target turrets or reticles that look like building blueprints. That stuff sells scopes to the "extreme" crowd who want to shoot game at 1000 yards, or to the "tactical/precision" guys who print tiny groups at a mile...or at least they talk about doing it. A hunting scope that screws up the balance of your rifle, and is almost as heavy and long as the rifle, is a hindrance, not an asset.

It's hunting. You want durability, light weight, compactness, and good optical quality. For the ultimate in peace of mind, iron sights are a must, and as stated above a back-up scope is worth its weight in gold. I have hunting rifles that have clean barrels, or have scopes mounted in permanent, non-QD rings, but for the most part they are not used on any hunt that I can't walk to from my back door. For serious hunts that involve flying, being away from home for a couple of weeks and spending lots of money, there is always another scope in the bag, and a set of sights on the barrel.

Ask yourself this: when is the last time you saw a serious hunter in the field, in pursuit of big game (not prairie dogs or rockchucks), who had a 6-24x zoom scope with target turrets and an adjustable objective? Not the guys on TV, not the guys who sell the stuff, not the guys who write articles and advertising and have stickers and decals all over their gear, and not the guys who are on their first hunt for anything bigger than a squirrel...I'm talking about the guys who pay for their equipment and their hunts, and have some experience under their belts. You'll probably be able to count them on your fingers, without even taking your mittens off.

I know this isn't a "nightforce", however these guys beat the #### out of this Bushnell and it still works at the end of the video and it will not cost both arms and a leg.

What did they really test? Damn near any scope will be waterproof. I have never had scope fog internally. Not even one.

Then there's the freezer. On a typical winter day out here you could crawl into a freezer to warm up. What did they prove besides that the knobs still turned? They damn well better, since a fridge freezer is cold enough to make ice and not much else. Will it track of it sees an ice-cube? They never tested that. Heck they never showed that it would repeatably track at all.

Then there's the drop test. It would have been nice to see a target before and after, and something like shooting a box or a tall target test to show something resembling tracking or return to zero. How about any of the targets? As far as holding zero though the concrete drop, it didn't. 5.5 inches of shift at 100 isn't a pass.

There's a video going around of a nightforce getting the crap beat out of it. Just try you tubing it. I just picked up a nxs 3.5-15x50 for my hunting rifle. From what I hear they are extremely durable, maybe a bit out of your price range tho. For what it's worth my dad has a 2.5-12 bushnell elite 4200 on his warbird and he fell cross a beaver damn, landed right on top of his gun and scope, put a dint in the bell and everything. Went home and shot it and it shot exactly where he had it before lol we couldn't believe it

It's probably the same as the bushnell one but I never watched it. It's nightforce endorsed so you could say it's biased or whatever, but this is just the video they have. This is not what sold me on the scope by any means lol I just found it interesting
