I have heard from someone that the Smith Enterprise direct connect Vortex flash hider can fit on the metric Norinco castle nut threads. Is this true? Or will I need to re-thread. I would like a "crazy horse" type of look for my M14...

The chinese barrel is threaded differently. Some folk have had ok luck chasing the chinese metric threads with the DC vortex, however I've seen some who've done this where the vortex did not thread on parrellel to the bore and others where there was not enough thread meat to keep the flash hider on the rifle.....

My personal vote is to replace the barrel with an american made one (what I've done with all 6 of my M305/M14s)....that way you're for sure good to go.

I installed a DC Vortex on one of my Norc barrels.

DO NOT use the Vortex to "chase" the threads.

I used an old USGI Castlenut to chase the threads. You have to be very careful and watch the squareness/alignment when doing this.

It worked great for me and the Vortex was dead centered and squared with no ill effects on the Vortex threads.

You may be right...I don't want to be messin up my barrel threads. Although it would be an excuse to get my barrel cut down... How do I get my hands on an american made barrel??

Norc stuff is all metric is it not? If so, but it may be easier to find a flash hider that is metric threaded instead of a whole new barrel? Just a thought. Thats what I did for my Norc M14. I found a metric threaded navy flash hider for my then "shorty" barrel and that cost me a few less dollars than getting a whole new barrel.

On a related note - on the Vortex that replaces the flash hider, but still uses the castle nut, can you use the Norc castle nut (will the Smith hider fit the splines in the stock Norc barrel?)

Yes, you can use the Norc Castle nut in these FHs, and the splines are the same.it is a very painless swap.:D

The only place were the threads are different (Metric) is on the Norc Barrel for the castle nut and gas lock.

FYI, a USGI FH is a straight swap over as well.

But remember that the Norc FH is ALREADY reamed to National Match specs. Standard USGI FHs are not.

SEI is developing metric threaded Vortex FHs. They said in an e-mail to keep an eye on their website for when they're available.

I've heard elsewhere on this forum that they have been saying this for a while. Still don't have it. The only people buying it would be Canadian buyers and I don't know if the market is big enough for it to be a big priority.

There are A LOT of Polytech owners in the U.S. that want a metric GLFS as well as us Canadians.

If Ron makes it, it will sell.;)
