Will the ACR have import problems?

Took this quote off the Bushmaster Website:
The Bushmaster ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle) will initially be offered in 5.56 NATO, available for law enforcement and civilian purchase early 2009. This release will be followed by military ACR versions in the later in 2009

If I'm reading this right, it looks like Bushmaster has got their head in the game. If they release a "civilian" rifle first, then the US state dept has no grounds to deny export, because the "military" version won't even be released yet.

The way the US state dept has been acting lately, I am not so confident.
Remember that the very name ACR stands for Adaptive COMBAT Rifle, so that is enough for the DOS to get all panicky.

Also, it now seems that guns chambered in 5.56x45 Nato are not allowed out, while the same gun in .223 Rem is allowed to be exported.

I hope we do see them here, I have liked the design ever since I saw the Masada prototypes at SHOT 2007
 
Heh... I was just ranting about the same issue in another thread.
The state department is getting out of hand.

No crime is committed with a $2500 rifle. The state department needs to leave Bushmaster, LWRC, and FN USA alone. Criminals won't use these, nor will terrorists. They are premium products priced for enthusiasts and collectors.

Instead of restricting Bushmasters exports, they need to go after the guy in the 1987 k-car with a trunk full of Saturday night specials who is trying to cross the ambassador bridge into Windsor. Stop him before he sells them on the streets of Toronto... is that too much to ask?
 
If it was available right now the State Dept. probably wouldn't approve it, let alone in 2009. Regardless of the restrictions, I'm pretty sure that there will be some that end up on this side of the border ;):D

Its not just label. Also no folding or retracting stocks or flash hiders.

When I wrote my SHOT show article for the CSSA magazine (I hear that it is just coming out this week, finally) I mentioned that Bushmasters parent company Remington should rename the ACR something else.
I did send a rough draft of the article to Bushy, so maybe someone there will take notice. Maybe....
 
Part of the deal with Rich Fitzpatrick and Magpul's licensing the ACR to Bushy was that it would be a 5.56mm 1:7 gun - and not go with .223 chambers etc.

I dont think you will see it in Canada frankly, the who idea for them was a excellent budgetary rifle for militaries and civilians.
$2500 - I heard they will be a lot lower than that.

Frankly Canadian gun owners are getting shafter by politicians in both Canada and the US on this. I would be writing your MP and complaining for them to start asking DoS for special rulings for the 51st State...

As I recall the details, it began with Lloyd Axworthy during the 13 year Lieberal Reign of Error. That part makes good sense. As to why the US continues to add more when our two countries have a good relationship now, I dont know.
I suspect it is because ever since someone flew a plane into a building, they are afraid of their own shadow now.
It really defies logic to think that with all of our pre-screening (PAL) and registration, a gun would end up in Iraq earier from Canada than directly from the USA, with NO controls on private sales (the so-called "gun show loophole")
Besides, in a country flooded with dirt cheap AK's, why would an insurgent smuggle in a $2000 gun with no spare parts?
 
Yep the liebs started it and now the gov't is saying we have to comply with UN rules - which are anti any gun not held by a dictator and his henchmen/ state police. and Canada has been helping formulate the UN policies and rules through advice provided by government financed NGOs such as Wendy Inc. and we still have a repuitation for harboring terrorists.
So Canadian and US officials throwing up their hands and saying we have to follow international laws is like someone pissing in your ear and telling you its raining...

Of course Canada having a reputation for harboring and/or being soft on terrorists doesn't help. Just listening to the news today and one of our lawyers defending an accused terrorist is saying he's not guilty because the detonators he was making were to be used against US or Canadian troops in Afghanistan instead of Brits which he's accused of... put yourself in a US or Canadian soldiers shoes...
