Will the smell of coffee scare deer?

Correct. You will never manage to eliminate human scent. What you can hope to do is bring it to a level where it doesn't allert game to a flight situation. The combination of scent free clothes washing, showering with unscented soaps, keeping clothing in airtight containers, cover scents and attractants are important parts of my hunting rituals. I also hunt from downwind and only use knee high rubber boots to try to contain scent and prevent it from being transferred as I walk. 27 dead whitetails tell me it works. ;)

and theres people that have never used scent controlling products and have shot many more deer than you with bows.

hunting gadgets, camo, and scents are just like fishing tackle. they're designed to attract the hunter/fisherman and their money. its more about having confidence in yourself than anything...

I'll tell you something that smells more offensive to the deer than coffee. Coffee pee!

So drink all you want ...... but for gawdsakes hold onto it til 'after' the hunt.

How can it possibly work to prevent you from detecting the smell without creating other scents (floating chemical molecues) at the same time? What is the chemistry and physics of the product, and how does that relate to a deer's olfactory senses?

its a simple science called oxidation for the scent killers that contain peroxide. The ones that contain baking soda or carbon, is another simple science called absorption.

They absolutely work to reduce odours. That is a fact. What isn't known as to what level and that has a lot of variables. There is nothing you can do to stop smelling completely, but you can by various means minimize it. Whether that minimization is enough to stop a deer from smelling you, again depends on a lot of variables. But simple science says that someone that practices good scent control will be less detectable than someone who doesn't.

People seem to think this stuff makes you invisible, and it certainly does not, but it can make you less visible. It will never be 100% effective. For one reason you still need to breathe, so unless you can scrub your exhaust you are still going to make a scent.

Whether you choose to try to minimize your scent profile is up to you. Somedays it may make the difference between getting a deer or not. Others it just won't matter. The thing is, you probably never know when its not working as the deer are nowhere near you.

It's your choice to make, but choosing to take the time and to spend the money to try to minimize your scent is certainly not a wasted effort. Just that the value you get out of it means different things to different people.

My very successful hunting buddy is totally into scent cover sprays when I am with him and we get out of the truck he is there spraying me.

If he hunts into thick growth to call elk he will carry a spare shirt and will switch into it when he is near where he is going to start calling he stuffs the wet one into a ziplock bag.

He expects the elk to circle him so he does everything he can to reduce his scent.

It must work he comes out with an animal where most others that hunt the same area don't ahh maybe he is just a better hunter.

i just had a thought...

any experienced deer hunter knows that deer are rather curious creatures. obviously coffee isn't a threat towards deer and they wouldn't have a clue what it is so i'd say drinking coffee while hunting could possibly attract deer due to their nature. this is assuming the only smell they detect is the coffee and the deer in your area havent figured out that humans emit a coffee smell sometimes.

they sell vanilla and black licorice scents so why not coffee? i wonder if adding sugar and milk would make it better or worse :D

For all the years I've hunted, I have smoked, ate salami sandwiches, eggs, PB&J sandwiches, potato chips, and not even showered in 3 or 4 days.. Every year I bag a deer. Deer are a curious animal and will seek to see what is different. Their very keen and weiry though, so be very quiet, move extremely slow and be patient.. It will come to you..

i usually take coffee in the morning and tea later. if the deer smells it, they have smelled you. aside from that, anything that makes you more comfortable and keeps you in the field longer will increase your odds of getting something.

Deer are curious, but it's been my experience that thet is maninly true of younger less experienced deer. The older more experienced deer just disappear at the first sign of trouble. Most you will never see. Big bucks don't get that way by being stupid.
Not that you can't fool them, just that it can be frustrating to do so.

And, I'll say it again, the stupid deer, those you can shoot.
