Hey guys-figured I'd stand a better chance of getting the right info here.. Always loved the look of full-length mag tubes and have owned several over the years. When the rubber hits the road, I don't need that many rounds for target shooting and for moving targets, that much weight near the muzzle throws your swing off. Start cycling rounds and the amount @ the muzzle changes with every shot. (former clay shooter here lol)

Anyhow, for a "fun" gun I don't like that much heft so I've been looking at this model. In an effort to talk myself into a gun I don't need (the real purpose of this thread) I'm wondering if this gun would accept a 500/88 bird barrel if I wanted to expand it's usefulness? I wouldn't need to ask the question if it was an 870, but less familiar with Mossbergs.

It wont unfortunatly. The mossberg 500/88 have a captive takedown nut and different magazine tube so its a different setup.

You'll likely have to get one of the 5-shot guns to fit a field barrel on it. Luckily, you can (or could, I haven't priced one out in a while) buy a Mossberg 500 w/2 barrels, a security and a field barrel, for about the same price as a 590.

Appreciate it Suther, and sort of the outcome I was expecting. I have shotguns to cover both bases (birds + fun stuff) so this isn't something actually needed. If it did both, I'd basically HAVE to buy it. lol

I've had a Mossberg 500 Persuader (Full length mag tube, parkerized finish) for a long time, bought used. I can't say enough about how durable that finish is, and it's proven itself a number of times. A huge part of the appeal of this gun is the finish, but also the shorter mag tube/lighter weight.

Basically, imagine this gun with 870 geometry/mag capacity, and no magazine tube. I'd already own it.

Yes. 590, 590A1 receivers will accept 835 barrels and vice versa.

I was going to mention this as well. It would require a spacer though in the OPs particular case as he has the longer 6rd magazine tube instead of the normal 5rd.
