will u use .22 LR for Coyote hunt?

Good enough for a coyote in a trap, good enough even for short range encounters where you are assured of shot placement. But for all round coyote hunting? No. So many better choices it makes my hair hurt.

Using a 22 LR for coyotes would be like hunting moose will a .44 mag. No doubt its been done but close range and a good hit is a must, no forgivness what so ever. I hope you have a semi, U'll need it. I think a 12 gauge with a full choke and #4 buck would have better range for a 1 hit kill than a 22 LR in the vitals.

I think a 17 hmr or 22 mag is the absolute minimum at more the 50 yards. I know from experience that with the 17 Ive had to pass up a few opportunities because even with the 20 gr XTPs I couldn't have gotten the penetration required for a decent kill.
I think a 22LR would be much the same but without the accuracy or long range penetration of the magnum rimfires.

That said, the 17 is less that ideal.

If a coyote pop's up in front of me and I happen to be holdding a .22lr, damn rights I'll use it. If I'm going out specifically looking for yotes? Much better choices out there, I like to use my deer rifles (practice for hunting season!)

Not as a specific choice but it will kill a yote. If i was out with a .22 and a yote popped up i would shoot it.

The only 22 LR long-gun, that I would consider as a close range 'adequate' tool would be:

A Toz-17 bolt action repeater using the Aquila SSS 60 grain bullet.
I would not personally use it past 50 yards, & on a coyote that was unaware of me, and a standing still broadside shot through the lungs.
Myself I wouldn't bank on finding his carcass, but he will be running his last mile or so.

But, the .222 Remington I own, is much better for this job.

Killed one this year while shooting gophers with my CZ452 Varmint CCI Quickshok 32gr 0064's. He came at me.

I dropped him at 50 yards. 1 shot through his tearduct. Stone Cold Dead.

Would I actively seek to do something like this at 100 yards? It would depend on if he was threatening my livestock or not. And If I had a better choice of caliber close at hand.

its all about bullet placement and skill a 22lr will kill a cattle at close range with one shot and the cows skull is alot thicker then a coyotes. that being said it still wouldnt be my go to gun for coyote hunting or anything over beaver size

I know i am going to get eaten alive on here for saying this but I don't care, people underestimate 22lr way too often. I saw a young deer get hit by a car and its front right leg was pretty much gone and all i had in the house with me was a savage mk1 .22lr shooting CCI Stingers 32gr. 1640 fps. The deer was with a couple other deer so I couldn't get any closer than roughly 90-95 yrds. I easily put one round through its brain and it dropped like a sack of potatoes. Later when I cleaned it up I checked the damage I had done I saw that its brain was pretty much mush.

Also I have seen farmers kill a lot of different animals with .22lr muuuuch further than that. it all depends where you hit your game.

If the dog was CLOSE and I had the 22 in my hands, I would take the shot. I would not actively hunt one with a 22, if for no other reason than it limits both your actual range and your effective range.

Now, to throw it out there, I do know of guys that have used them where noise is a concern (around livestock, close neighbors, etc). Still not my first choice but depending on the setup (read, close range with an accurate gun and decent ammo), it would be workable.

The fact that something is possible does not make it a good idea.

I would never deliberately set out to hunt coyotes with a .22 RF.

I am fairly certain plenty of folks have made that same observation about shot placement. Yes, a bullet - even a little one moving relatively slowly, like the .22LR - will of course KILL if placed correctly. The point is that for general purpose coyote hunting, the .22LR offers too much of a margin of error and there are a myriad of better choices. Coyotes rarely cooperate to the point of offering you an easy head shot at short range.

For hunting in hardwoods near cattle and out of a tree stand I use a 22lr 32grain stingers for shots out to 35 yards I have never had one run more then 25-30 yards I admit its not my first choice but my 25-06 scares the hell outta cattle. My 22mag wit cci accupoints is downrite deadly on coyotes out to 75yards. Shot placement is what its all about

Fred everest used a 22lr for leapord n lions at night in africa. Many mountain lion hunters use 22mag revolvers for hunting over hounds. 22s are capable but not the best

Coyote is at the upper edge of the 22lr's capability. Still has to be THE most common round used to get rid of problem critters whom get too close to the front door/barn/paddock/whatever.
I wouldn't use it to <hunt> coyotes, but it is an effective vermin round.

If I was actively "hunting" coyotes...I would not use a .22LR, as I have much better options. ;)

However if a coyote was around the barn or hen-house, I would not hesitate to shoot it with a .22LR.

My .243 is a much better coyote killer. Our cows are used to us target practicing right behind the barn, so noise isn't a consideration.
We did a little target practicing last night, and after my son shot his .270 at 100 yards, We shot with the .22 at the same distance. It seemed like I saw the hole appear in the target after I heard the shot.
