Thats the the gun of choice for me in BC, however when I am chasing Sharptail,s I go to the 12 guage Browning Auto 5 cause they are smarter and fly, (great wing shooting fun)

Fast incoming bluebill. He dipped just as I fired the first shot, came in a knee height and then flared straight over my head as
I took the second--- at about 15 feet apparently. No intention of shooting him that close but went with the swing and the lead and by the time the full speed tailwind assisted bluebill and the shot met up the distance had closed considerably.

2 3/4 # 6 steel, modified choke, SBE.

We have mostly Spruce Grouse up here. The odd Ruffie and some Blues and Ptarmigan in the higher elevations.


I only know of one fellow up here who actually hunts grouse with a shotgun
and a dog.

Most people shoot them with .22's.

All I've ever used is my old single shot target .22LR mainly because when I was younger my dad never owned a shotgun and I spent my money on rifles. I just rest the front blade right were the birds neck meets its shoulders.

I have nothing against shotguns....just don't have the money right now to buy one is all.

I used to hear all the time when looking for grouse that you should never shoot the grouse thats up the highest in the tree, shoot the lowest one first so it doesn't scare the others when it falls out.

Only ones I've shot were with a 12ga, head shots while the bird was on the ground.... I will probably try it this year w/ a .22 though.

In Southern Ontario, the birds are VERY skittish. It's 12 guage or nothing.

The further North I go, I'll switch to the .410.

well i us the 12g as well down were i am in southern ont i do a lo of beaver trapping and in all my travels this pas year i only had a chance at one bird .he was sitting in a weed row at less then 10 feet so i let him go .never did see any more the rest of the winter .i hope thy do better this year as i love to eat a few DUTCH

Grouse in Ontario

So i live in Ajax, have a 22lr and a 20ga WHERE can i go shoot some grouse?

Lol what else you gonna use? A 12 guage at 10 metres will shred them up pretty good! Even a 20 guage is overkill at close distances, and I cant remember the last time I saw a grouse that didnt let you get within 15m. A 410 would be an option but i find them useless for much else so Im not about to buy one.

Of course you can just aim high with a shotgun so that the bottom of the pattern hits the head and neck.
