Here is my experience with Remington 870s and Trak-Lock ghost ring sights.
I bought a brand new 870 Police with ghost ring sights (Trak-Lock ghost ring) a couple of years back and I learned to appreciate those sights. And that shotgun became one of my favorite guns for bushwhacking … I just love the sight picture on that gun ....

For that gun Remington uses the Wilson Combat Trak-Lock ghost ring rear sight in combination with a Remington front sight ramp and XS dovetail front sights.
Now I wanted the same gun but with a more classical blued finish. So, I ordered a blued 870 Police with a bead sight and same barrel length as my 870 Police with ghost ring. I shipped the receiver off to get a Trak-Lock ghost ring installed … and I sent the barrel off to get a Remington front sight ramp soldered to the barrel and the barrel re-blued. The only piece missing now was the front sight …. So I measured the front sight of my trusted “870 Police with ghost ring” and ordered the exact same sight/part from Gravel Agency.
Basically, I ordered exactly the same parts that Remington used to build my trusted “870 Police with ghost ring” and to build that exact rifle but on a blued receiver and barrel.
And once all the pieces were back …. I assembled the gun … installed the front sight, and I was looking forward to sighting in that gun …. and I expected it to shoot to point of aim after some minor adjustments with the rear sight.
To my surprise that gun was shooting slugs 5 feet high at 50 meters … and I ran out of adjustments with the rear ghost ring.
Hmmmmmm ……. two basically identical 870s … with the same parts installed … but one shoots 5 feet higher than the other?
Long story short … I had to order 3 other front sights in different heights till I found the one that would shoot to point of aim for that gun. And that was the tallest front sight that XS would make for Remington shotguns.
In the end, things worked out and I am happy that I have gone the “Remington front sight ramp and XS front sight” route. At least I was able to swap out the front sight for a taller one.

My lesson learned:
Remington 870s tolerances are “loose” …. You can basically have two identical guns …. same caliber …. same barrel length … same sighting system … but one needs a taller front sight than the other.
And I think I now know why Remington does not use the Wilson Combat Trak-Lock front sights ….
It was an expensive lesson .... these were all expensive Tritium front sights ...
