Wilson/Scattergun Tech +1 Extension Help...

Hey guys,

Just bought a Wilson/Scattergun Technologies (right hand) +1 magazine extension for an 870. Don't know if I'm missing something here, but how does one go about installing it on the mag tube? I know it threads on just like the standard end cap, but the sling plate doesn't seem to move independent of the assembly. I notice that there's a snap ring at the front of the assembly and am wondering if I have to remove it to allow the sling plate to move freely? Guess what I'm trying to figure out is how I'm going to thread it on without the sling plate hitting the barrel? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I was going to get myself a pair of snap ring pliers, but before I do so, I want to make sure I'm not removing something that shouldn't be mucked about with....

use a large hammer.. if it wont fit use an even bigger hammer. Drink profusely while doing project.


or just put the sling mount on correct side, either left or right depending upon what you ordered and tighten it on..its extremely basic. I use a channel lock over a towel so it doesnt mar to give it a quarter turn only past hand tight...keeps it from vibrating off with slugs.

Dont over think this...its a very basic install.

Huh? Basic enough yes... but I still don't know how the thing's supposed to thread on with the barrel in the way of the sling plate. Is the sling plate supposed to be on as tight as it is right now or is it supposed to be free moving (independent of the main extension assembly)?

I think that the "sling plate" is either left or right.I have the lefty version. If it is the right hand model then the plate points to the left straight out, it doesn't swivel. I'll need to look at mine again but FWIW mine installed no problems. I believe that the snap ring would not need to be removed for installation it would however be removed to index the plate 90 degrees(plate facing down). My advice start over and give it a try.

Thanks guys. I'll have to look at the part again. I know how it's supposed to sit (indexed for the sling plate to be used properly) so I assume it should go on without issue - otherwise the moving parts are just seizing up. Guess maybe I'm over thinking this... Let you know how it goes.

The sling plate is free moving. The problem you're having is that the whole unit is parkerized at once. The sling plate and the snap ring are so slightly seized on because of this. Give the sling plate a spin around the rest of the cap and you'll be fine.

Aaaaahh! I figured it was something like that. I had a look at it again and still couldn't figure out why the darn things doesn't move. Guess I'll get that pair of snap ring pliers and do a little bit of "smoothing out" on the moving parts...

You don't need to mess with the snap ring. Grab the swivel in one hand and the knurled part of the cap in the other and loosen it up.
Firing the gun will loosen it up further in a short time.

Exactly.

About the snap-ring:
I've found that even with the snap-rings removed the assemblies will not disassemble further. (I think they might be hot when they are assembled.) You'll want the pliers for something else, regardless.
 
Update... I stopped in at Crappy Tire and picked a pair of snap ring pliers up today. Pulled the snap ring open - but didn't totally remove it. These things ARE parked as a single unit! I came to this realization when I heard a faint "cracking" noise from the parts separating - as the snap ring pulled away from the extension cap assembly. I also noted that the parkerizing was thinner under where the snap ring sat. Anyways, I managed to loosen the unit up after I broke the "parkerizing" seal. It spins around fully with some effort. Thanks again for the clarification and advice guys.

Oh yeah... PP I got the extension from The Shooting Edge. They usually have them in stock and should have the +2 extension.
