Win 100 vs Rem 74x

I went the route of the 760/7600. I had the barrel shortened to 20 inches on my 30-06 by my local GS. I found 20 inches to be perfect. The balance feels perfect in my hand.

Shortening a barrel is certainly an option. It has to be cut & crowned properly, and the front sight remounted if irons are to be retained. Not cheap if a professional has to be paid.

Common wear items (extractors, ejectors, some firing pins etc) can be a deal breaker when trying to source for older firearms. The Browning BAR (IMO) is the best of all 3 mentioned but the timing latch and pin is the Achilles Heal and difficult to find, if needed.

My local GS has done this for me a few times. The price has always been very reasonable. Each time I have had the barrel shortened/re-crowned and the front sight re-installed (I use a Williams peep sight) $110 every time.

You could buy a standard length 7600 and have the barrel chopped.. Be a lot easier to find and cheaper. Maybe things have changed, but they used to be all over the place.
I've had a few cut to 20". It handles better than the 18.5" Carbine. I have 20" 30-06 in the safe right now I would not trade for a Carbine.

Far too many troubles with the semi-autos. The 760/7600 is a FAR better choice.

$110 to cut, crown and remount the front sight is very reasonable.

Personally, I avoid drilling and tapping front sight holes in barrels (a stressful operation); prefer to install a banded front sight ramp.
