Hi cgn'ers I am putting together a 1886 winchester that was originally a 40-82 that the barrel was nfg and I bought a 50-110 barrel and finally got it to the gun smith (you know I had to wait in line) he called me to day to say that he thinks the feeding ramp or carrier needs to be changed because of the caliber and maybe another part that I forget can anyone help me with my problems I don't want to turn around now with the amount of money that I've put out so far. thanks Matt

I'd guess that the other parts referred to were feed rails. Your gunsmith may be able to modify the existing parts. If he isn't experienced at doing this he may be reluctant to undertake it and is hoping you can find parts. That may not be easy to do and you may have to consider finding a different gunsmnith who has worked on these rifles.

Win86

I just tried fitting a 50-110 casing into an 86 reciever and I see it hangs up on the rear part of the carrier (it narrows too much for a .50 casing there). I wonder if that could be machined open a bit more there. The receiver I tried it in had a 40-82 barrel on it too but was no good. I had a 50 cal. 86 but was talked out of it a few years ago - big mistake. I still have dies, brass etc. for it. I would really be interested to know how you make out with your project. I would be interested in doing that also. I have reloading data for it if you need it. You're lucky to find a 50 Express barrel. Hope this helps some, Don.

86/50EX carrier.

Just as "dcbb" said, 50 EX brass will hang up on the back lips of the carrier, this being the case because the brass diameter of 40-82, 45-70 etc measures at the base approx. .500 and with 50 EX brass it measures .550. This greater tube diameter is what hangs up on the opening of the carrier. Looking at mine 50-110 the left side of the carrier does look (is) thinner. Playing with a spare carrier and a cartridge I don't think it would take much with dremel to releave it enough to get it to fit. Otherwise, having this model in all calibers the parts are the same except the barrel. I hopes this helps. These are fun guns to shoot but they are definitely a cast bullet proposition and for good measure I use a gas check. Was your replacement barrel an original or a repro?

Regards, W S

I recall reading in a number of references that a number of modifications had to be done at the factory in order to get the 50-110 to function properly. You may want to google the following sites for further information: Paco Kelly's Leverguns.com (the new website and forum), Winchester Arms Collectors Association (WACA) website (go to the forum).

The actual parts change is easy. Most anyone familiar with the rifle's internals could do it, he should not charge much for that. However, finding the parts may be an issue.
I think the sites already recommended, plus ebay, and gunbroker, may be sources. It's worth a look at western gun parts as well.

Doug Turnbull Restoration, Inc. is the "Guru" of 86's. ( do a Google or Microsoft search) He may be able to help with both "know how" and, I'm sure parts. He's done a number of restorations on the 50 Express, 50-110 and others. He will not be "cheap" !!!

Isn't the .348 ( shortened/necked down) a derivative of the 50 case ?

A buddy & I did a 450 Alaskan (based on the 348 case "blown" out to 45 with a sharper neck ) convert on a Mod. 71 years ago. The carrier & cartridge guides as I recall did not require modification ... but going from your 40-82, I can see that you may well have to.

I tried Turnbull and was told by Keith how answered the phone that they don't sell parts and when I asked if he new where I could find parts he told me...E GUNS! so that was the end of that conversation.

Matt,
I had a 50-110WCF built on a Mod. 71 Browning. There are really no parts to exchange, but some parts have to be modified . I have a copy of some of the original drawings from when Winchester started building the 50-110 on the 1886 action, more than 100 years ago now. I sent the drawings together withe a new 50-110 reamer that I bought to Dave Jennings in Pritchard, BC. He did a beautiful job, and although I like to shoot a flat nose, heavy, large meplat lead bullet in my gun, it works beutifully. The original 1886s were designed for more rounded bullets of lower weight.
Send me your E-mail address, and I can try to send you the drawings (2 pages). I your gunsmith is not experienced in working with lever actions, consider Mr. Jennings. :)

Regards,

Vasa
