I have one in ,303 British that is dark between the lands but strong rifling. It shoots .777 for 3 shots at 100 yards with mild 37gr RE#15 /174 SP Hornady. I went at the bore the other day with Sweets 7.62 and was a full hour taking out blue patches.There seems to be no end to it.Is there a better way and how long can I leave this @##$#@## in the bore? Who knows what was fired out of it by previous owners? Long 28" pipe to boot.

Get a can of Wipeout. Spray it in, leave it overnight, run a patch through & repeat as necessary. The dark bore may be the result of firing corrosive ammo, which, given it's vintage, this rifle most certainly has done.

The best luck I've had is with Gunslick Foaming bore cleaner. Spray it in and leave it for 8 hours. Run a patch through and repeat as necessary. I've mucked out heavily fouled barrels that were virtually impossible to clean, including my Winchester Model 1895 in .35WCF.
I was originally going to get it re-bored to a wildcat .338-.303 British but when I shot it with .303 it shot VG so I didn't bother.I suspect WW2 corrosive was fed to it at some point ridden hard put away wet/dirty in this case.I'll get more aggressive about the cleaning after I get my deer in the freezer.
