Hello all, my friend wants to learn reloading and I will be going basics and teaching him this great ubsession of mine and he has the luxury to use my set up. I currently load .223, 308 and 243. He has his old faithful .284 win. Ammo is getting scarce and he had a few hundred brass. He can only get 150gr factory loads and this is a great moose gun but he wants a little more punch. I suggested 160gr -175gr I was wondering if any one is loading this cal. I have heard great things with r-17 but I was wondering if anyone would like to share same combos?

RL17 is scarce... To un obtainable right now.
I never was a fan of heavier than 150's in the .284Win, as those long bullets need to be seated to deep to fit through the magazine well, thus taking away from valuable case capacity.
Why not find some 4350, H414/Ww760, and some 150gr. Partitions and have at it.

FWIW: I killed moose, deer, and even elk using nothing more than those unabashed BTSP Hornady 139's out of my first barrel for my .284, I now shoot 140 Accubond's, and have no complaints either.

Great expansion and clean drop with the 140gr? Apparently he can oy get factory loads of 150gr accu bonds. That is interesting about the seating resulting in less case capacity...

I've owned two .284's the first a mod 99 Savage and now an A bolt Browning. Both shot very well with the smaller bullets, 125-140 gr, The Browning would clover leaf and the Savage around an inch. As the weight of bullet increased above the 140 gr, the groups with both rifles would expand up to about 2.25"-2.5 with the 150-170 grns. Still minute of moose for a hunting round at medium ranges but wouldn't consider them for long range hunting on smaller game. Sooner put a 140 thru the heart at 400 yrds than a 170 "somewhere in the body" LOL

What powders are you using now. I know this gun will like what it will like. He is looking for hunting round so 1moa at 100 yards is fine he just doesn't want to be getting sol for ammo. I have talked to him into 150gr thinking game kings....

Here are 2 loads from my 99 Savage 162gr. BTSP Hornady-52.5gr. IMR4350-C.O.L.= 2.800"-2800fps

139gr. SST Hornady-56gr. H4350-C.O.L.=2.830"-2945fps

The 162gr. load test topped out at 53grs 2816fps - no pressure signs. The 139gr load test topped out at 57grs 2995fps - case extraction was sticky. As usual back off 10% and work up.
