Win 70 vs Rem 700

Had to resurrect this thread just for shzts and giggles.

I've owned about (darn... I lost count) over 10 M700's in Varmint and Police configurations. And I've owned (then sold, thus proving what an idiot I am) another 6 Winchester Model 70 Hvy Varmints.

Currently I've got 3 M700's that I have not sold yet because I can never make up my mind which ones I can afford to keep. Now I know what Tiger Woods feels like (but I'm just a lot more on the poor side, so my options are far fewer) when it comes to boomsticks and projects. I just love playing with the M700's because they remind me of big kids' LEGO. :D

My latest long range boomstick happens to be a Model 70 Stealth 2010 production that I bought for $ 900 from Bashaw Sports in Alberta (God bless you Albertans) and it shoots into 0.75" with the wonderful Lapua Scenar 155 gr boolits bought from HirschPrecision one of our board dealers. Peter Dobson is a great guy to order stuff from! :D

I've been spending lots of time reading that thread on the best gunsmith to build a custom LR boomstick and lots of great advice with respect to projects abound in that thread. Sadly, I ain't in that price/snack bracket so I will just have to settle for factory barrels and make THEM shoot well. :ar15:

I have another build on the go right now with Doug at www.Ellwoodepps.com (they fuel the addiction). I have a weakness for the .22-250 cartridge and it's ability to launch 75 gr Amax bullets. I cannot forget my beloved 80 gr Sierra MK VLD boolits also. ;)

Since I cannot afford FINE custom barrels like Obtunded and Juanvaldez sell, I will just have to make do with that I can have pulled off factory rigs. I needed a .223 light barreled carry groundhog gun so I bought an SPS M700 from Epps. I discovered that this sporter barrel shot really well :D So I kept that barrel and sold the action to another M700 lover on the CGNutz site. I needed a heavy fast twist barrel in at least a 1 in 9" configuration so I bought another Rem M700 SPS TAC .223 from Epps (didn't I tell you that they fuel my addiction?). Doug pulled off that heavy TAC barrel and is currently installing it on another SA M700 that I bought off them also, and then re-chambering to .22-250.

Now you can understand why my wife thinks (read: confirms) that I'm an idiot ? Hey, it's all good fun! This is what you do when you cannot afford much at one time. Projects change with respect to available funds, needs, wants, and circumstances (like having an unexpected expense in the family).

It's all good!

Cheers all... Have a great weekend!

I have a Stealth II and a 700P, both in .308Win. Hands down the Stealth's fit & finish is above and beyond the Remy. Action is also much smoother. Unlike the Remy the barrel is full heavy profile which has next to no taper and accuracy wise it shoots as good if not better than the Remy. The stock is a lot more comfortable (to me anyway) as it does not have that annoying palm swell on the side of the grip.

If I had to have only one the Remy would be dropped without hesitation.

Regards,

The win70 was the first rifle I ever shot. Plus it was the first rifle I later bought. I do prefer the quality of the M70 over the Remington. No doubts about that. But.... the 5R just shoots like a house on fire. I've shot a few of them and they have all been sub .5 moa out of the box with match non reloaded ammo. I can't complain about that. Plus the price is fairly reasonable.

I actually prefer the "annoying" palm swell. I find it helps keep the trigger pull going straight back without any side movement from my finger. I also use a Hogue grip on my pistol for the same reason. For me at least it helps.

In my case the HS stock fits me like a glove. So I can't complain about comfort with the Remington rifles.
