i'm working on a winchester mod. 92
the screw that holds the front barrel band on..... has broken inside.
I'm wondering if there is some way , other than carefully drilling out the broken bit..................any help would be appreciated.

can you get the front sight off?-the barrel band screw is a long shanked affair with only the lastlittle bit threaded- what i'm thinking is lube the outside of the barrel, and maybe it can be persuaded off with a soft mallet or something that won't mark-that screw has a very thin shank , but with the head broken off there should be no tension on it-

WoW I had this happen with my barrel band screw, but it was for Marlin and the screw stripped. I had to tap it out with a nail and hammer.

92 ???

that screw on the old models is actually longer than you think. I have screwed it out most of the way, it actually broke mid way through the screw. I don't imagine its holding on by more than a couple of threads, however it was pretty tight, thats why it broke it guess.

think i'm still valid- it's the head of the screw that tensions the band- drip a little oil down the outside of the barrel so that it gets in between the barrel and band, and see if you can loosen it-maybe penetrating oil would be a better choice- there's only air between the barrel bottom and the magazine tube-no reason it can't come forward?

ok, i had a real good look and i see there's actually 2 barrel bands- i assume you're talking about the aft one, as the one that's fore is before the barrel and front sight-other than taking the front sight off, i see no way- however, it looks like the front sight is a drift type- ie you use a drift and hammer to move it in it's dovetail- should be a simple tap in tap out
