Win M70 Precision Rifles

Does that Palma rifle have the receiver milled out to use stripper clips?
YUP! She's the real deal.
It is box stock factory ( inclluding the sights) , complete with the stripper clip for using the ammo issued for Palma matches.
The rifle is also marked "Palma Match" from the factory.

ZuluMike, Thanks :D

The scope came with the rifle. It's a Simmons 44Mag. 6-20x 44m. I believe the rings are Leupold.

Here's the long story: I bought this rifle and it shot well. Then later I started getting vertical stringing. So after examining the rifle I noticed it wasn't free floated.I wondered if the barrel was heating up and causing the stringing. I took it in had the barrel free floated and the action bedded. The rifle came with a trigger job, which seems to be fairly nice.

I went to the range. No more vertical stringing. But... I was having difficulty dialing in the scope. Finally I couldn't figure out WTH was going on. So I simply cranked the dial 4 notches to the left which should track 1 inch at the 100 yards I was shooting at. It shot in the same hole as the previous shot. By now I'm royally pissed of. Then while scratching my head I actually saw the crosshair vibrate. I Sh*t you not.

So the scope will be going in the garbage can. Besides the clarity of the glass was pretty sub par anyways. I could see better with my 3-9x Burris fullfield on my 10/22. The glass on that scope is very good.

The scope that will replace it will be a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm. Then this spring we'll see what we get :D.

Cat nice rifle.

I'll see if I can snap off a couple pictures of the M70s we use at work. It wouldn't surprise me if some of those were pre64 versions. Unfortunately they've seen some wear.

Zulu: That is a good looking and well built rifle. Congrats on you good taste. Seeing your rifle makes me lonely for the 264 mag I got rid of about 15 years ago. If only a guy could go back in time.......................GW

I have a Winchester 70 factory .308 target rifle, very similar to cat's, but not one of the rifles specifically made for the Palma. Consequently it does not have the centre swivel for a 2 point sling. It too has the special receiver - long action with shorter port, long rear receiver ring cut for chargers. Redfield Mk. 8 sight, handstop, etc. It is in extremely fine condition, completely factory original, and shoots very well indeed.

Man 'o man! Some nice rifles in there fella's. Keep 'em coming.

Gord, I actually can't decide which I like better, your McMillan or Stealth, they both look good. Nice paint work on the Stealth too.

Why did I have to miss out on that dirt cheap pre '64 rifle a couple of weeks back? Any one wanna sell a CRF action for very little dinero?:D Short or long, I can work around that.

Just so the correct information is out there;
There is no issue with single loading CRF model 70 rifles; pre-64 or not. There is no strength advantage to the push feed actions. In fact the reverse is probably true. The right hand lug on a push feed M70 is essentially hollow. It is hard to imagine this being stronger than the solid lug found on the CRF actions.
Many gunsmiths prefer the push feed actions for target rifles simply because they are easier to rebarrel (no extractor cut required). Some also believe the extractor on the CRF actions is more likely to influence the bolt position in the receiver. Simplicity is almost always better when it comes to target rifles.
I have 4 Model 70 rifles. One is a pushfeed in 6 br with a McMillan marksman stock. The barrel is a Smith gain twist 27 inches long. It wears a 6-24 Weaver scope and is a competitive "F" class rifle.
The second one is another pushfeed; a short action in 308. This one has a Smith gaintwist barrel and is bedded into a laminated Marksman style stock (desert something . Kind of pink). This one is used as a target rifle with 4x scope.
The third rifle is a pre-war M70 action with a 28 inch Smith barrel in 6.5x55. This one wears a laminated marksman stock in "electric blue" and is a good 1000 yard rifle.
The fourth one is a long range hunting rifle in 308 Norma. another pre-war action, it has a Smith 26 inch barrel. The stock is walnut and patterned after the Sako Varminter stock but with a left hand cheekpiece (for me). It weighs about 10 pounds all up.
I like the Winchester actions but think it is easier to make a competitive rifle on a Remington. Nonetheless, I have built rifles on M70 actions which shot pretty well. Someday, I might post some pics. Regards, Bill.

Some nice M70's here.
Here is a pic of my M70 CRF in .300 WinMag with a 20 moa base and Ops Inc brake.

Some really nice rifles are showing up, let's keep them coming. BUM, Leeper I would love to see some pics of your M70's. I also have a 243 M70 project that is in the works it's going to be a lot lighter than the 223 or the Stealth, main use will be for coyote hunting. It should be done around Feburary, I hope.
