No! I just like to make you think. I love the .35Whelen but in a BOLT! Thats why i sold it to you.....H:S: I may look for a Ruger 77 in the 35Whelen.
Don't kid yourself, you do own a nice rifle but for me! i seem to reach for the bolt action guns more than the pumps.....

It's all about Labour costs, if a craftsman spends few hrs extra on a SG, well there's your $400. After the employer adds in all the pension plan costs, medical, workmans compensation, vacation pay, it goes on and on. That was the what happened in 1964.

I have a fw in 30-06. Very nice rifle indeed. I was looking at a supergrade a few weeks ago and Very Very nice. I will have to pick one up in the near future for sure.

I've owed a few Model 70's over the years and currently have a Model 70 Fwt XTR (pushfeed) in .270WCF and a custom built CRF Fwt in .338-06. I had a M70 Fwt in .270WSM but it just didn't feel right with the heavy barrel so I sold it. Now if only I could locate a pre-64 Super Grade in .300H&H Magnum (Holland & Holland Super .30) at an affordable price (HA!)

I think that the Supergrade would make a fine all around rifle in .30-06.

It's heavy enough for a nice range session on and off the bench, and light enough to carry around all day in most terrain. The barrel won't move as much when it heats up, and the extra 2" is a little less muzzle blast.

One can always put a McMillan Edge and aluminum bottom metal on the rifle if bound for mountains. One could even mount a light 4x32mm in Talley QD rings, and have a 6x42mm for a bit sharper/nicer shooting at the range. Most of the time I'd leave it stock.

I have both the SG and FWT and like both. I do think that the good performance in most situations of sporter - weight rifles is currently very under appreciated.

To try and answer the question of cost between a Super Grade and a Featherweight. I don't see and mechanical difference. The difference all comes in fit and finish. The blueing is high lustre of the SG because the metal surfaces are all highly polished (more labour) the wood on the SG is much high grade, inlet swivel studs, all steel bottom metal as opposed to aluminum. So the cost is justified in the upgraded cosmetics. Just get any custom rifle maker to add you inleted sling swivels and that will be a 300 option on its own.

I have a featherweight, a Super Grade in 75th aniversary, and an Alaskan. The only one that has been somewhat of a disappointment is the stock on the Alaskan. It looks nice and you don't notice anything right off. But I decided it needed an ebony fore end tip and pistol grip cap so I went about adding them. Thats when I noticed the symmetry of the stock in the pistol grip area was off. Just poor set up of there stock duplicating equipment, or just bad design of the original plug stock. The most frustrating part for me is the checkering is pressed.!! not machine cut like the FW and SG.

After installing the ebony I stripped the stock finish, reshaped the pistol grip a bit to give it symmetry and in doing so I had to chew into some of the checkering plus you get stripper in there. So I set about to repoint and recut the checkering. What a dam nightmare, thats when I discovered right off it was pressed as it doesn't follow any normal conventional rules or patterning of conventional cut checkering. I have lots of experience in checkering and this stock has been a challange and the worst nightmare I have done in a long time. Good thing this one is mine and not someone elses as the checkering is going to have a few bobbles in it many of which you will need a manifying glass to see but there still there.
A real disappointment Winchester/browning decided to cut costs by doing this.

The supergrades have IMO obviously had more TLC. The actions are smoother. The finish is much nicer polish. The checkering is a bit sharper. You get all steel bottom metal with the same polish.

Buy both and compare: you'll see.

Ya I think I'm gonna go w/ my gut and get the FW, I have enough"Heavier" rifles in the cabinet.
I forsee the FW as an absolute Gem for walking all day. :)
I also see no need of a cheek piece w/ a 40mm scope

I just picked up a new FW Compact in .308 last week, put a Elite 2x7 on it, great light handy package. Beautiful fit and finish, really happy with it. The new MOA trigger is NICE.
