I have a M 70 in .308 made in 1974 - looking at putting a synthetic stock on this rifle. As I understand it a Model 70 of this vintage is not a true short action, but a long action with a boxed off mag? (this one is) so is it safe to say that if I can get my hands on a Whinchester "long action" take off stock that it will fit this rifle?

Thanks for sny input...

Yes. The action and magazine box are standard length (with a spacer for .308). A stock for a post '64 pushfeed long action should be fine.

Thanks, this might be a stupid question but... is there a difference between the push feed and CRF stocks? If say it was a Post '64 "new" CRF long action?

Is your rifle pushfeed or CRF? When you said '74, I just assumed long action, pushfeed. I've never tried a current CRF in a pushfeed stock.

It probably will, but I cannot say for sure. There is the different ejector in the CRF action, but as far as I know, the receiver screw spacing is the same, as are the receiver dimensions. Make sure the barrel contour is the same.

the new "Classic", or controlled feed long action Model 70 is reported to be about 1/4" longer than a long action push feed or a Pre'64 action...
I'm sure there are CGN members who own examples of each...measure between the guard screws, center to center.....that should tell us...

post 64 'long' actions are all the same hole spacing, so a current model 30-06 length will fit.

what year did winchester start making a 308 lenght receiver ?

Thanks guy's - I think I'll give ita try and let you know how it works... too bad it's not local...

"what year did winchester start making a 308 lenght receiver ?"

IIRC they began making the true short action in 1984...
