I have this rifle pre64 mod 70 and it was rechambered from 243 to 6mm Ackley. Great caliber BUT I find I'm not using it, collecting dust. So I was thinking I may rebarrel it to one of the 25 calibers, just not sure which one the 250 Savage or the 257 Roberts. This will be for deer.
Thanks. Bill

One cannot fault RC's choice as the 257 Roberts is an awesome round, but my choice would be the 257 Ackley.
I'm on my second, a heavy barreled Springfield and my next one will be a nice light walking around Mod. 70 pre-64 just like what you are looking to re-barrel.
Its an excellent round, light enough for varmints with a 75 gr. bullet or a heavier bullet for Mulies.... :)

I'd just leave it as a 6mmAI myself. Roberts won't kill anything the 6mm won't. If you're looking to step up in bullet weights, look at the 6.5x55 or 7x57.

My question is, if you've found you're not using the 6mm, why do you think you'd use a .25 any more? Blargon has the right idea, a 6.5 or a 7X57; either one makes a good general purpose big game cartridge.

Rembo, I'm sure you could do that, you have the barrel and I have the action.
The barrel would have to be fitted to the action as you know.

I wasn't offering to install it. Any of the excellent gunsmiths on these boards could do that for you.

I could however ship it directly to the 'smith of your choice.

Well, you can't unring the bell, but my thoughts are that the fellow who rechambered a fine pre 64, 243 W, had holes in his head.

Thanks again guys. I think I may leave it as is. Now to find some partitions.
I was thinking 25 caliber because I don't have anything in this caliber. The other suggested calibers I have.

Rechamber a factory barrel, no thanks.

The work and cost in rechambering a factory barrel, does not make sense to me. I would add the extra and buy a custom barrel. If I did go that route I would most likely go with the Roberts oorrr the 284 Win.
