I'm thinking about getting a defender. Can the defender take other winchester 1300 barrels? It looks that way from pictures but I just want to confirm.

I want to have it with the 18" defender barrel while hiking, but I would like to have a longer barrel that has adjustable chokes for clays and hunting.

Also how much do extra winchester barrels go for? OR does anyone have any experience with the 1300 practical defender? I just saw that on wholsesales site.

Bought a 18" Defender in 2002. Shot it a couple of times when I got it. Have not had a need to do any defending yet. Have other shotguns for other purposes.

Been thinking of pulling it out for some fun. Got a bunch of 2 litre pop bottles that need killing.

Winchester shotguns cannot change barrels as easily as an 870 - It depends on the magazine tube length of the shotgun you have vs. the tube length and barrel you want to exchange with.

I'm not so much looking for cheap...I'm looking to only have one shotgun that does it all for everything. My room mate hasn't been having much luck with his 88. What do you guys think of a 870 express then a 2nd 20" rifled deer barrel for my purposes? I'm thinking that as my 2nd choice if I can't get the 1300 practical.

If price isn't really a factor, grab an 870 Wingmaster and whatever barrels you need. The bluing on the Wingmasters is much nicer then the flat black finish on the expresses.

I had my 18" defender barrel custom fitted with a Colonial Arms choke system for about $100 at a gunsmith. I've taken everything from rabbits to ducks and partridge with it over the years. Beautiful gun - wouldn't trade it for a Remington, ever.

Not sure about the legitimacy of this, but I was in a gunshop a few weeks ago that sold both 870s and Defenders. The salesman tried to tell me that if you put excessive force on the Defender while cycling the action (say, if you were stressed and shooting at a bear that was trying to kill you) you can twist the magazine tube out of alignment.

Anyone experience this problem? Maybe the commission on the 870s was more than the Defenders.

Twist the tube? I've had Two defenders, and one of them had huge milage. I worked the action as fast as I could (1300 is fast anyway) and I never broke or bent anything. Much as I like defenders, as a do-all I think you may be better served with an 870.
