Recently acquired nice semi auto Winchester model 100 in .243 Winchester.

-When I got it, she fired great but didn’t extract the empty. If you pull the bolt back and slam it home it will grip the casing and eject.
-If you fire with loaded magazine it will not extract but will strip a live one from the mag.
-boltface/extractor looks good and the entire rifle has been disassembled and cleaned.
After speaking with Winchester, they informed me there is a firing pin recall and to send in the old for a new one. After 3 months, (firing pin spent some R&R in customs) I replaced it and now when it fires the primers fall out of the casings. This happened with 3 different types of factory ammo/3 shells of each. I decided to be safe and not fire it anymore. Anyone help?

Thanks Looky!

Sounds like the chamber needs a good scrubbing. Had this same issue 30 years ago, to the point the extractor was ripping the ends of the fired brass off, leaving the empty in the chamber. Disassembled and polished the chamber (0000 steel wool around a good fitting brush with oil, on a drill), reassembled and worked 100%.
When you take the trigger/magazine well off, check to make sure the arms in front of the trigger are straight, not bent down. This does affect proper operation.

the win 100 will Preform best with Handloads using the same powders used to load the M1a / M14 / m305
the gas system was designed around the older powders .. gas pressure curve is different with the new powders

Not sure if changing powder will fix your issue or not, or if it is a extractor or extractor spring issue. or something else

Mine has a similar problem where many times it will not cycle properly and the empty case is stuck in the chamber. I'd have to tap the bolt open to remove the brass. It was my favorite hunting rifle, and has been to the gunsmith twice now and still doesn't cycle reliably.
I think I'll take your suggestion and give the a the chamber a good scrubbing.

I had one years age, pre 64 I purchased from a buddies FIL that dint taws them spent cases very well.
Found a crack in one of the gizmos inside the receiver.
Ordered a replacemint part and bahzing, werk'd slicker'n chit.

They sure don't make pleasant clack clack noises like the old A-5's..............................:p

One of the very few pleasures of being deaf. They all sound the same.

Both the 100 and the 88 had problems with the stocks cracking, but the model 100 I had years ago was a solid performer and decently accurate with everything I ran through it. Sounds like the chamber, action and gas system could use a thorough cleaning and a good lubrication. May clear up your problems (as long as the extractor is in good shape).

I just gave mine a very thorough cleaning, polished the chamber, and lubed. Everything looks good inside, nothing is bent. I used some Winchester SuperX 180 gr. factory ammo. The first shot fired and cycled perfectly, the second shot ejected the spent brass but didn't load a third round. After that each time I fired the chambered round the next round would get caught up on an angle in the receiver, rather than go into the chamber. I'm out of ideas on what to try next. Anyone have a suggestion?

Every one I've handled has had the barrel loose in the channel. Some very little some quite loose. I've tightened the front sling screw as much as 2-3 turns. On my own I cut two CC strips a placed between the fore end and barrel@ the swivel stud, a fix I found for accuracy@ 24 hr. campfire I think. reduced my 165gn. handloads to 1.25"=/- @ 100 and of course tightened up the action .Magazine lips and spotless gas system are items of concern.

My Dad bought a Win 100 when they first hit the market in the early 60's. I have it now. It will act up now and then if not meticulously clean, all of it, including the mags. Every time you fire it clean it especially the gas system as it is known to rust up I suspect from condensation etc. I have seen some that you could not get the action open as the system inside was locked tight from slight rust of the gas system. We had 5 fellas using Win 100's in the camp for many years. I also learned to keep the ammo clean by wiping each cartridge each morning before use with a slightly oily cloth. They don't seem to like dry pocket dirty ammo. Also when your loading a cartridge in the chamber let the bolt slam shut. If you let the bolt down easy the lugs at the bolt face will not turn into position and the rifle will not fire. This is not good when after sitting on stand for several hours and a deer walks out, you put the rifle up to shoot and nothing happens. I know this one from experience. There a nice rifle when they are kept very clean and there working properly.

In my case the chambered round always fires, I do let the bolt slam shut, its the cycling of the rifle that causes me grief. Next time I'm out I'll try a different magazine, although I doubt this is the problem.

The ears on the magazine are bent. Get yourself another mag to compare, and bend yours to match.
My model 100 was acting exactly like yours, and that is how I fixed it. That was 4 years ago, and not 1 hiccup since.
Cheers

Thanks for the tips, fellas, I sent it in to another gunsmith a few months ago. It took him a couple of attempts to get it fixed, but he finally got it cycling every time. The problem was the gas orifice in the cap. The hole was drilled out too large by a previous gunsmith who had attempted to fix it a few years ago. He installed a new cap and everything is good again. I also bought a new extractor kit, but it wasn't required at this time, but he suggested that I hang on to it because that is another common problem that can happen when the extractor gets worn.
