Does anybody know if a Winchester model 100 with 22" barrel can be converted to the carbine length by shortening the barrel. This is a gas auto and I wonder if the conversion can be done or not without adversely affecting it's cycling? Carbines are quite rare in this model but there are plenty of the rifle version.

It can be done, but it's going to be a rifle with a cutdown barrel, not a true carbine. I believe the carbine also used a barrel band. There will have to be some alteration in the gas orifice in the barrel, not sure what the size would be.

The carbine has a barrel band and a plain stock. I'm sure it can be done but in any case it wouldn't be a true carbine. I'd put out a WTB ad in the EE and search around gun dealer sites before chopping down a regular 100. This is always my first step and I always get replies no matter how rare an item. As much as I like them, the 100s have sketchy reliability at best and I wouldn't be messing with one unless I was sure that functionality would be unaffected. I had one jam on the second shot at a nice buck a few years ago. I was looking for an 88 carbine in .308 last year and thought it would take forever to find one but after a little digging I picked one up at a good price. Just keep searching and you will find a carbine. They shouldn't be too expensive even though they are a harder-to-find rifle. Good luck.

I hate the birch stocks and barrel bands. I cut my barrel in Win mod 100 in 308Win to 20" for better portability in bush, parkerized the whole metal, installed MPI lightweight synthetic stock and Burris scout scope. I dont care what anybody says, mine is reliable and quite accurate with 180gr Speer Mag-tips. Did I mention that I hate birch stocks and barrel bands in original carbines?

The 88 and 100 carbines were not offered with birch stocks. I do find the regular Model 88s/100s more attractive than the carbines but the factory carbine is still a nice gun in my opinion. In any case, a parkerized synethic 100 wouldn't do it for me but to each his own.

I'm not sure if the gas port is equal in size for both the rifle and carbine from the Winchester factory. If the carbine has slightly larger port opening to allow a little more gas in because the dwell time for port pressure is shorter due to the bullet opening up the closed cylinder sooner in a shorter tube. Gunnrunner say's his is reliable cut to 20", and the factory carbines were only 1" shorter at 19". The Rifle stocks are prettier, but I liked the barrel band as well. I had two 100's both in .284Winchester, a rifle and a carbine. A M100 carbine in .284Winchester, is the rarest of the rare, with only 917 units in this combo made from 1967-1971.

I'd say cut her to carbine length, but I'd be a little scared to go to the legal 18.5" limit right away, in case of an accident or poor re-crowning. I'm sure an experienced smith would cut at 18.75-19 and crown back to legal length gently and precisely.

Good luck on the carbine.
